JP: Did you complete research during your
residency?
KO: My research and Master's thesis were in the
basic sciences and involved the genetic component of tooth agenesis. We focused on the interaction of two genes: PAX9 and MSX1. Mutations
in either are responsible for tooth agenesis. My
research gathered evidence of an interaction in
the proteins that are created by each gene. Dr.
Rena D'Souza and Dr. Hitesh Kapadia were important mentors who guided me through the
process.
JP: Do you have an emphasis or interest in some
aspect of clinical practice (surgery, craniofacial,
interdisciplinary, mixed dentition, adult treatment)?
KO: My orthodontic practice is very standard,
with a mix of adult / early / adolescent treatment.
As a smaller center with no children's hospital,
we do treat some craniofacial cases, the majority
of which are cleft lip / palate. Being in Canada, we
are also lucky to utilize orthognathic surgery frequently in treatment.
JP: Have you developed special clinical protocols?

JP: Switching gears, how did you choose your
practice location?
KO: I chose to practice in the province where I
grew up. I guess home is where the heart is! I
purchased a satellite office in my hometown. For
my main office in Regina, I joined up with two
other orthodontists to start a group practice. It
has been a great experience. We have become
friends as well as business partners. The practice
has grown and now includes five orthodontists
working at the original location.
KO: No, I haven't, but I always enjoy reading
about orthodontic pearls and do incorporate
small changes regularly into my office.
JP: Tell me about your family. How did you meet
your spouse?
KO: Sandi and I met when I was in dental school.
She was a kinesiology student and I was in dental
school when we started dating. After we married,
Sandi was able to enroll in and complete her PhD
in epidemiology at The University of Texas School
of Public Health while I finished my residency.
Sandi worked for a few years in the provincial
health region before we had children. She currently does not work outside the home; it is
important to us that she be at home with
the children.
JP: Tell us about your children.
The Olfert kids play with Dad in a

KO: We have three very energetic and beautiful
children, of whom I am proud. Alexandria is 10,
Benjamin is 8, and Samuel is 3. The eldest two are
heavily involved in piano, as well as soccer, basketball, and speed swimming. They definitely
keep Sandi and me busy!
