Dr. Terry Dischinger: An Incredible Journey
as a Basketball Player and Orthodontist
Few people are as fortunate and humble as Dr.
Terry Dischinger. Known to the general public as
an All-American and Olympic gold medalist in
basketball, Dr. Dischinger is also a very successful
orthodontist who speaks all over the world on his
Class II treatment with the Dischinger protocol.

Passion for Basketball
Dr. Dischinger graduated from Purdue University
with a degree in Chemical Engineering. While
in college, Dr. Dischinger was a three-year AllAmerican in basketball. After his sophomore year
in school he was invited to participate in the
1960 Olympic trials in Denver. At 19 years of age,
he was thrilled to fly to Denver in a commercial
jet plane- a first for him. Upon his arrival, Dr.
Dischinger discovered that he was on the D-1
college All-Star team with the likes of his idols
Oscar Robertson and Jerry West. For the first time

ever in Olympic trials, the D-1 college All-Star
team won the three-game tournament. Only five
to seven players from the winning team could
be selected for the Olympic Team. Dr. Dischinger
was in the starting lineup at the tournament so
he was an automatic selection for the Olympic
team. The selection was announced at 6:00 a.m.
after the final game. Of course, Dr. Dischinger
was awake when the team was announced. With
tears in his eyes, he called his parents to inform
them that he had made it onto the team- the
original dream team. That summer of 1960, team
members met to practice for three weeks at West
Point. The team made the 14-hour plane trip to
Italy for the Olympic Games. During the opening
ceremony, there was a parade into the 100,000capacity stadium. The U.S.A. basketball team was
in the front rows, and the applause was deafening. The moment was even more special given
