you are conducting team members' performance evaluations.
Protocols
Create structure: under emergency conditions,
having a protocol in place enables anyone in
the office to do tasks that they do not usually
perform.
Promote consistency and directly relate it to
patient experience.
Create protocols now with your current team.
Make it fun: for every protocol your team creates, put cash in a bucket that will go toward
a shopping spree for team members who
contribute. They must spend the money on
themselves; any money remaining after a
60-minute shopping spree goes back to the
doctor.
Team-building events are a must for all highperforming teams:
Have fun with parking lot games at a recessat-work day.
Organize high-energy summer events, such
as scavenger hunts.
Try an end-of-summer stress reliever, like a
spa day or wine tasting event.
Arrange a fall freak-out event, such as a
Halloween activity, to celebrate National
Orthodontic Health Month.
Volunteer in your community as a team with
a Spring into action event.
Set up a "Minute to Win It" event: create fun
challenges that can be done in one minute,
and ask your local dental offices to join you.

Meetings are essential:
Schedule meetings a year in advance, and
issue agendas.
Hold all-team annual planning meetings, then
quarterly updates.

Administrative Staff
Plan a monthly clinic meeting and administrative team meetings.
Meeting minutes should be shared within 24
hours. Alternate your scribe at every meeting.
Meetings give people a voice.
Feedback is critical:
It must be timely, clear, and concise. Always
find the good: it's there and needs to be
acknowledged.
Be consistent, set deadlines for improvement,
and define goals with staff input.
Team Alignment
Perform annual start, stop, and continue assessments as a team; include one item only in each
category to keep feedback brief.
Start: What should we / I start doing?
▪ Things that are not being done, but should
be done in order to get better results.
Stop: What should we / I stop doing?
▪ Things that are not working or are not
practical.
▪ Things that are not delivering desired
results.
▪ Things that we or others dislike.
Continue: What should we / I continue doing?
▪ Things that are working well.
▪ Things that we like or need.
Performance Wall
A performance wall is a visible area in your office
that serves as a reminder of how valued every
team member is. Provide praise in the form of
handouts in the morning huddle. Pin these handouts on the performance wall.
