editorial AAO House of Delegates (HOD) Meets in Pennsylvania S ixty-four delegates from the AAO’s eight Constituent Societies in the U.S. and Canada met for the annual legislative meetings at the AAO Annual Session in Pennsylvania on May 3rd and May 6th. PCSO has the largest delegation, with 12 delegates. This year, Dr. Paul Helpard (Courtenay, British Columbia) joined the group as an alternate delegate, making sure we always had the full complement on the floor for any votes. the public is making many more visits to the AAO website in search of member orthodontists. Surveys show that the public has an improved understanding that orthodontic specialists have more training than non-specialists who provide orthodontic treatment. The HOD decided to gradually increase the CAP assessment by $50 per year over the next three years, starting in 2013. This will extend the campaign to reach out to men, and provide additional venues for advertising. Here are a few of the resolutions that were passed: — Be sure to go to AAOmembers.org for advertising materials available free to members, including posters, videos, and media advertising spots. They are very well done, and will coordinate your practice with the branding that the public sees in the advertising. • No dues increase! The delegates reviewed the AAO budget and held the line. $130,000 was taken from excess liquid reserves to balance the budget. This amount is a one-time expense to provide a complete review of the governance system used by the AAO. • The Young Member dues structure was revised to: • — First-year member – 10% of dues — Second-year member – 25% The AAO Annual Session is held rather often within the PCSO region. The House approved a PSCO resolution for the Trustees to look into the Annual Session planning to see if meetings can be held in more diverse locations. This year’s meeting in Pennsylvania was a very well organized and rewarding meeting for members and exhibitors, and was a financial success. — Third-year member – 50% — Fourth-year member – 75% — At the fifth year, the Young Member finally achieves the privilege of paying the full amount. Orthodontic residents now pay $30 per year for membership. • Assessment for Consumer Awareness Program (CAP) – A careful study done last year shows that the CAP is definitely having good results in that The House approved a plan to develop a guide for members to refer to when presented with a contract for working in an orthodontic clinic, starting an associateship, or purchasing a practice. • Last year’s credit union resolution came back to the House this year. Based upon an in-depth risk analysis performed by a consultant, the delegation determined that the plan was not viable for the AAO at this time. —Dr. Gerald Nelson, PCSO Bulletin Editor S 2 P C S O B u l l et i n • SUMMER 2013 http://www.aaomembers.org
