D ouglas H om : Tell us about your childhood and family growing up. m Dr. Glenn SameShima: was a career military officer, so I grew up on Air Force bases, mostly in Dayton, Ohio. I was born in Northern California. I graduated from high school in Xenia, Ohio. y father Dh: how did you first get interested in orthodontics? GS: I became interested in orthodontics during my first assignment as an Air Force dentist. I was stationed at Yokota Air Base near Tokyo, Japan. We had 22 dentists and all specialties. I liked periodontics at first, but Sid Wisdom, our orthodontist (who now practices in Sacramento), convinced me that “ortho is the answer.” I was not really interested in specializing upon graduation from dental school. Dr. Sameshima and Brian during trip to the IADR meeting in Australia Dh: Tell us about your dental education and orthodontic residency. GS: I went to UCLA for my predental study, majoring in mathematics. I went to dental school at UCSF on an Air Force scholarship. We had great teachers at UC; back then, the operative gods like Charlie Watkins and Al Schuhard ruled the school. After serving in the Air Force, I did my orthodontic residency at USC. While there, I decided to pursue a PhD in craniofacial biology. I was fortunate to have a great PhD mentor, Professor Michael Melnick, a mathematical geneticist. I finished the PhD and ortho program in four years.
