executive director ’ s report TIME TO INVEST IN EDUCATION A s many of you know, I live in St. Louis, although I spend a significant amount of time on the West Coast. In St. Louis, the signs of impending summer are all around us—barbeque sauce now takes up more room on the grocery shelves; the St. Louis Cardinals are playing at our stadium; and allergy indexes are sky high! For PCSO staff, this means that it is time for Annual Session registration! jill Nowak Registration for the 2013 PCSO Annual Session opened May 10th. This year’s Annual Session is in San Diego—a vibrant setting for a vibrant slate of speakers and topics. To learn more about the lineup of speakers and events, visit: http://pcsortho.org.gravitatehosting.com/Educational-Opportunities/Annual-Session.aspx. I know you will be excited about the program. I want to ask you to consider attendance at this meeting as an investment in yourself and your staff. We all know that attending a two- or three-day meeting is a significant investment of resources—time, money, and attention. Multiply those resources by the number of staff a member registered for the conference, and you can see that attendance is quite an investment. Like any investment decision, the anticipated Return on Investment (ROI) should drive the final decision as to whether to use resources in this manner. So, how do you measure that return? • • • • • • • • What is the value of a concentrated meeting providing 20 hours of CE in 2½ days? How is that value enhanced by the fact that hundreds of colleagues are in the same lecture and able to add context and discuss major points? What is the value of practice “pearls” learned in a lecture, at a roundtable discussion or in a conversation with a colleague at an event? What is the value of developing a professional network and enhancing existing relationships through face-to-face interaction? What is the value of getting away from the pressures of the practice and other obligations to focus on professional development for a few days? What is the value of seeing orthodontic vendors in an exhibit hall that is “rightsized” for the opportunity to speak with them at length without taking time away from patients? What is the value of the team-building that results from a few days together in a beautiful setting and a singular focus on improving your practice? What is the value of a social program that highlights the wonderful meeting venue and provides memorable fun with your family, staff and colleagues? And what is the added value of doing all of this in one of California’s most scenic cities—one with a perfect climate? PCSO leadership and the Annual Session Planning Committee understand that attendance is an investment, and we strive to provide attendees with a high return. We know that our members have many options for education—from the AAO Annual Session to manufacturers’ conferences to virtual learning. Each of these offerings provides value and we hope our members can take advantage of various programs. We also hope that the PCSO Annual Session is an integral part of your annual educational and staff development plans. We invite you to make the investment this year—PCSO will provide a strong ROI!
