president ’ s message S y n e r g y & D i ve r s i t y PAT H WAY TO S Dr. Williams October 17 – 20, 2013 erving as President of PCSO represents not just a year of leading an incredible organization; it is also a wonderful opportunity for personal growth. The highlight of the President’s year is the Annual Session; in this President’s Message, I want to share some personal thoughts about the upcoming Annual Session in San Diego. The year has been going by very quickly, which is to be expected given that the PCSO is a very active constituent organization. In simple terms, we have a lot of things going on—of which the Annual Session is the biggest. I approached my term as President without a preconceived agenda, with one exception: I had a passion for the concept that the theme of the Annual Meeting should revolve around diversity. Orthodontics has evolved markedly since I completed training at the University of Washington in the late 1970s. At that time, my class was special because two of my ten classmates were female. As you all know, the field of orthodontics is now very different. Gone are the old days of the white-male-dominated specialty. I feel that our racial and gender diversity makes our specialty and PCSO stronger. In adopting the theme of diversity, we also recognize that we serve a multicultural society. We also have diversity in the environments in which we practice. PCSO members treat using diverse clinical approaches—but we all share the common goal of excellence in service to our patients, orthodontics, dentistry, and society. We have a wonderful Annual Session Planning Committee headed by Bryan Hicks and supported by our talented and experienced staff. Early in the 2013 meeting planning process, we discussed possible themes and I took the opportunity to outline my vision of the diversity theme. The committee embraced this idea and added the idea of synergy. Those two words—synergy and diversity—perfectly capture that our multi-faceted membership makes our Society stronger. The choice of this theme clearly reflects that PCSO is an organization that celebrates this diversity. I hope that you will join us in the celebration. Through a number of vehicles, the board and staff monitor all aspects of our Annual Sessions carefully. This includes the Member Needs Surveys of 2010 and 2013, the Annual Session Planning Committees and the Annual Session Review Task 4 ExCELLENCE Force. It is no secret that organizations in the nonprofit sector are experiencing some diminishment in numbers of attendees at meetings, and PCSO is not immune to this trend. A number of reasons have been postulated for this continuing pattern, but a common theme is that the evolving membership doesn’t place the same value in face-to-face meetings as did past groups. I recognize that there are significant virtual learning opportunities available, but I feel strongly that the PCSO Annual Session offers a rich environment to the attending member and his/her staff members. In so many ways, this richness can’t be duplicated in an online environment. I believe the difference between face-to-face and virtual education parallels that between getting a college degree from an online university and attending a brick-and-mortar university, where one experiences the full spectrum of the college experience. Reflecting back on my university years, I most value the human and environmental interactions that came from being immersed in the total experience of an institution of higher education. The PCSO Annual Session offers a tremendous location in San Diego, a broad spectrum of speakers who represent the best in orthodontics and life, and a full array of social activities that promise to be both fun and memorable. Additionally, our meeting offers a great opportunity to connect with other orthodontists, including classmates, friends, and colleagues with whom you want to discuss clinical techniques and approaches. Before every Annual Session, my classmates and I look forward to catching up on the details of everyone’s lives, and this is a personal highlight. Each year, I think it is amazing that my classmates are aging, when I clearly am not! I encourage you to reflect on how quickly life passes by and how we all value these precious interactions. As you plan your personal and staff education through the rest of the year, you have no better opportunity to combine highquality education, a beautiful location and personal enjoyment than to attend the PCSO Annual Session in San Diego from October 17th to 20th. See you there! ―Dr. Bryan Williams, PCSO President P C S O B u l l et i n • S SUMMER 2013
