pcso business SPRING 2013 TRUSTEE’S REPORT TO PCSO By Norman J. Nagel, D.D.S., M.S.,Trustee Dr. Nagel T he Board of Trustees (BOT) met just prior to and following the May 2013 AAO House of Delegates (HOD) and Annual Session (A.S.) meeting in Philadelphia. The reported attendance at the Annual Session was 14,203 (including 8,224 orthodontists). The resolutions that passed the 2013 HOD included the following: • The formation of an AAO Credit Union resolution (previously passed by the 2010 HOD) was rescinded—the AAO will no longer be pursuing this project. • A “senior limited practice” waiver may be requested by doctors with at least 30 cumulative years of membership (excluding student membership) and who practice no more than 350 hours per year. This “senior limited practice” waiver may be used a maximum of three years. The HOD recommended that the AAO proceed with a Governance Structure Study. The firm of Mary Byers, Harrison Coever & Associates will determine the budgetary implication of this study. The HOD moved that the AAO investigate the appropriate methods for the secure electronic transfer of patient information/records that satisfy the requirements of HIPAA. A report of findings will be made to the HOD before February 15, 2014. The assessment to fund the AAO Consumer Awareness Program (CAP) will continue. The assessment will gradually rise from $700 for the FY 2013-2014 year to $750 (FY 2014-15) to $800 (FY 2015-16). The HOD also recommended that a Task Force study the funding mechanism for the CAP. Communication to members will stress that this program involves not only “advertising,” but also AAO “branding,” and the materials are available to all members to customize for use in their practice. • • • Member dues will continue to be $793 (for US Active members). Delegation Chair Dr. Ron Wolk expertly led the PCSO delegation. Your PCSO delegation included President Bryan Williams, President-Elect Ron Jawor, Secretary/Treasurer Frank Beglin, Immediate Past President Rob Merrill, Ken Fischer, Bryan Hicks, Lili Horton, Gerry Nelson, Erik TinHan, Tom Merrill, Lesley Williams, Paul Helpard and myself. Dr. Bob Varner served as trustee for the PCSO at this meeting, but was elevated to his new position as president-elect of the AAO at the conclusion of the House of Delegates. AAO Website The AAO new member website, www.aaoinfo.org, has launched. Please go to this new site and pay particular attention to the new “Communities” section. This area of the website provides an opportunity for member discussion on a variety of clinical, administrative and practice environment topics. Feedback to the AAO would be greatly appreciated. Congratulations to the PCSO members who were reappointed or appointed to Council positions for 2013-14. SUMMER 2013 • P C S O B u l l et i n The PCSO is well represented on all AAO Councils and Committees. Mobile Apps AAO staff will investigate developing a consumer and member app to present to the BOT in September. Also, staff will look at a potential “template” app, or an app that would be part of the member app, for constituent organizations to use. Advocacy The AAO continues to be an advocate for members in Washington D.C. Patton Boggs, LLP, the AAO’s lobbying group in Washington D.C., gave a detailed written report to the House of Delegates and invited the membership to a meeting at the A.S. Some of the discussion items of interest: • The 2.3% medical device excise tax has and continues to be a concern for AAO members. Bills have been introduced or reintroduced in both the House and Senate to repeal the medical device tax. The AAO continues to monitor this because it has a significant impact on our members and the patients we serve. • Flexible Spending Account limits continue to be a priority issues for the AAO. FSA contributions are currently capped at $2,500 annually. This limit negatively impacts patients who are seeking alternative ways to fund not only our services, but also other medical services. I would encourage everyone to stay in contact with your Congressional representative or senator as the Affordable Care Act continues to impact our personal and professional lives. Finally, although the Annual Session was very successful (in terms of members and other attending and revenue), AAO staff will be examining future year contracts and whether the schedule and pattern could be revised to reduce the length of time of the Annual Session by one to two days. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you as trustee-elect and now trustee of this great Constituent. The PCSO is blessed with many talented and dedicated individuals, willing to take time out of their personal and professional lives to work tirelessly on behalf of the PCSO/AAO. The PCSO is also blessed with an excellent staff from AAOSI. Ms. Jill Nowak, our executive director, and her staff do a superb job of managing the day-to-day activities of the organization. In July the trustees will gather for a planning meeting, led | by President Elect Bob Varner. The trustees will meet again in St. Louis in September. Dr. Gayle Glenn, AAO’s first female president, leads the BOT and AAO. We congratulate Dr. Glenn as she guides our specialty for 2013-2014. S 5 http://www.aaoinfo.org
