President's Message Staying Connected in a Large, Diverse Organization Dr. Frank Beglin PCSO President 2014-2015 Covering 11 states and provinces and 1.2 million square miles, and serving nearly 3,000 members, PCSO is a large organization any way you look at it. While there are many differences among our members and the towns in which they practice, there are even more similarities. One of the most rewarding aspects of serving on the PCSO Board of Directors is the opportunity to meet fellow orthodontists from our region, which is large and geographically diverse. As we hear about issues, challenges, and successes experienced by other orthodontists and by component members acting together, it opens our minds to actions we can take in our home regions and share with our colleagues there to create a better environment for not only our specialty but our patients and our communities. Finding Solutions With 11 directors, four officers, and a few ex-officio members, the PCSO board is relatively large. The board's size means the advantages of various viewpoints, work, and communication styles and ideas can be exploited. Task forces and committees are formed to get work done, advise the board, and brainstorm ideas, but some of the most gratifying discussions take place when we are all together, in a board meeting, and finding solutions that work across the many facets of our membership. The work of the directors is vital to the success of PCSO's mission, and they represent their components well. But it is impossible for one person to share all the wonderful things happening at the component level. PCSO officers have been learning that firsthand as they attend various component meetings this year. As president, I've recently attended meetings in Alaska, Alberta, and my home state of Nevada. President-Elect Bryan Hicks has attended meetings in Washington and his home province of 4 British Columbia. Both of us, as well as SecretaryTreasurer Paul Kasrovi, plan on attending several other component meetings in the upcoming months. We're racking up the miles, for sure, but getting to know more members and seeing more of the PCSO region has been worthwhile. It is nice to create personal relationships with colleagues. Listening as they share their concerns and ideas provides us the information we need as we consider programs and activities that will be helpful to PCSO members. Helping our Specialty Thrive Beyond personal connections, attending component board meetings has yielded insights into challenges facing our fellow boards as they work to create positive environments in which their own members and our specialty can thrive. The PCSO board is committed to supporting each component, and each of their members, in their search for excellent patient service, as they contribute to their communities and as they move through every stage of their professional careers. Each component director brings his/her perspective to our board meetings, and the officers bring another facet of component views to our discussions. Spending parts of the spring and summer attending these meetings makes me anticipate the PCSO Annual Session even more. It will be great to reconnect with some of the new friends made at these meetings. I'd like to say thanks - on behalf of Drs. Hicks and Kasrovi as well - to each component and its members for the hospitality, the conversation, and for your commitment to excellence in the orthodontic specialty.  PCSO Bulletin  Summer 2015
