New and Younger Members Evan Ayers, Resident, UBC Why did you apply to the orthodontic program? Practicing as an orthodontist will give me the opportunity to make positive, meaningful, functional and esthetic changes in the patients I treat. We all know that orthodontics is not a lifeor-death matter; no one has ever died from a malocclusion. However, treatment of malocclusion can significantly improve psychosocial measures. As a health care provider, I find that very rewarding. Dr. Evan Ayers Resident University of British Columbia Vancouver, BC Dr. Vanessa Browne New and Younger Members Committee Tell me about your orthodontic residency program. The orthodontic residency at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a three-year Master's program in beautiful Vancouver, BC. Although it is still relatively new, the orthodontics program at UBC benefits from the extensive experience of both our program directors, making it a strong residency program right out of the gate. UBC is currently building a new graduate specialty clinic, which will give us the opportunity to work with and learn from other specialties in an interdisciplinary and collaborative manner. What are some highlights of your residency? I have enjoyed learning from a wide variety of instructors from all over the province. I am fortunate to have a great group of co-residents to learn alongside, and the camaraderie we have formed has served to make the learning process more efficient and enjoyable. Additionally, in the third year of our program, we take the American Board of Orthodontics exam. Dr. Evan Ayers and his UBC coresidents. 54 What are your plans after graduation? I plan on being a full-time private practice orthodontist at an undecided location in British Columbia. After garnering sufficient clinical experience (not to mention paying off educational debt), I hope to be involved as an instructor at UBC Graduate Orthodontics. Are you involved in any activities in PCSO or AAO? I'm a resident member of the AAO and enjoy the available webinars and bulletins. I also represent UBC on the PCSO New and Younger Members committee. I look forward to becoming further involved with PCSO. What benefits do you enjoy from PCSO? I enjoy reading the PCSO Bulletin and look forward to learning more about the issues facing young orthodontists throughout western North America. The specialty is rapidly changing, and it's essential to be connected and stay on top of these changes. I've yet to attend a PCSO Annual Session, but am looking forward to doing so this fall. Tell us about your family and personal interests. Although I have no children of my own, I have three young nieces and one young nephew. They're great, they're a ton of fun, and yet I don't have the responsibility of looking after them fulltime. Having my own family will likely be on my agenda post-residency. Aside from the full-time commitment to UBC, I enjoy spending as much time outside as possible, whether I'm skiing, running, biking, hiking, or on the beach.  Computer images of the new UBC graduate clinic.
