In Memoriam Dr. Peter Picard, 1919-2013 Peter Picard was born on the shores of Lake Constance on January 7, 1919, and died in Lafayette, CA on August 11, 2013. He was an athletic young man who excelled in gymnastics, kayaking, sailing, and above all, alpine and cross-country skiing, winning many world-class competitions in the United States and Europe. Dr. Peter Picard Walnut Creek, CA An International Adventurer Peter began his international adventures as a 16year-old physical education teacher at a private school in Italy, followed by two years in Sweden teaching and competing in gymnastics. In 1940, war-torn Europe compelled Peter to begin a long and arduous journey to the United States, beginning with an 11-day train ride across the Soviet Union, then to Yokohama, and finally by freighter to San Francisco heading to New York. In California, Peter fell in love with the snowy Sierra Mountains and put down roots, becoming a popular and sought-after ski instructor at the newly opened Sugar Bowl, where he taught many local celebrities and Hollywood stars. He entered the University of California, Berkeley in 1942; with the U.S. at war with Germany, he was asked to join the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division as a ski instructor, but chose instead to enter UCSF Dental College. Later, he was selected for the Curriculum II Orthodontic Program. A Career in Orthodontics After associating with Dr. Dick Railsback in Montclair, CA, Peter opened his first office in Danville. He later moved to Walnut Creek, where 58 he practiced for seven years before being summoned by the draft into military service. Peter joined the U.S. Air Force and was the only orthodontist in Germany assigned to Ramstein Air Base. He became Captain of the U.S. Air Force Ski Team. He enjoyed returning to his beloved Bodensee (Lake Constance), lecturing in German and learning from some of the stalwarts of the European orthodontic community - such as Drs. W. Balters, Schwartz, and Korkhaus - on subjects such as palatal expansion and Nuk Sauger nipples (which he later tried to introduce in the States, to unreceptive and disinterested experts). Peter returned to his practice in Walnut Creek and established a long-term associateship with Dr. Clu Carey in Palo Alto, where he became familiar with Clu's creative biomechanics; later, he was able to share many of those concepts with the ortho residents at UOP after becoming an adjunct professor there in the early 1990s. He was honored as UOP's Outstanding Faculty Member in 1995. Peter was an ABO Diplomate, and a member of the Angle Society. Peter closed his practice in 2007, after nearly 60 years of practicing "Orthodinkus" - a slang term he coined. He then opened the orthodontic clinic at the U.S. Army Missile Base on Kwajalein Island in the South Pacific. For a few years he traveled there every five weeks for a three-day practice. Peter was predeceased by his wife, Terry, whom he met skiing at Sugar Bowl. He is survived by his son Robin.  PCSO Bulletin  Summer 2015
