PSCO Business Component Reports Arizona ASOA Continuing Education Program The Arizona State Orthodontic Association (ASOA) will hold its Annual Session on Monday, December 5, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ. The session, which will offer 7.0 CE credits, will be held from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. In the morning, AJO/DO Editor-in-Chief Dr. Rolf Behrents will speak on "Growth and Age: Discovery and Application." In the afternoon, Dr. Behrents will present "The Development of Expert Skills in Dentistry." Details can be found online. Brochures will be mailed to all PCSO members in late August. Dr. Jae Hyun Park ASOA President British Columbia The British Columbia Society of Orthodontists (BCSO) currently has 101 active members. This year we were awarded the full CAP matching grant by the AAO ($33,469.47 USD) and we have continued to utilize Athorn and Clark to implement our marketing strategies. Television advertisements began this past January, along with a Google Adwords campaign. The BCSO has also partnered with the PGA of BC to promote fitness and healthy lifestyles for the youth through BC Minor Hockey and Canucks Junior Golf Week. We've held two meetings thus far in 2016, including our AGM in June. This meeting featured a presentation by Nicola Wealth Management in the morning and a golf tournament in the afternoon. Our first meeting of the fall will be in September. Our new executive committee for the year is Todd Moore, president; Lucien Bellamy, vice president; and Fred Cheung, secretary/treasurer. The Smiles4Canada program is now organized across the country and our BC coordinator, Jeff Fall 2016  PCSO Bulletin Stewart, is currently creating regional representation to help patients with limited means obtain donated orthodontic treatment. One of our members, Amanda Maplethorp, was recently elected vice president of the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) for the 2015-2020 term. Our dental regulatory body, the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, passed a bylaw governing advertising and promotional activities that will take effect at the start of 2017. They state, "The fundamental purposes of this bylaw are to ensure that all promotional activities by dental professionals are clear, verifiable, and understandable and that they are not misleading, incomplete, or deceptive." Now when a dentist lists his/her name, there may be no initials or extra credentials behind it; it must only be followed by the category of his/her registration: either as a general dentist or as a certified specialist including the area of specialization. The bylaw reasons that this change is being instituted "because there are so many acronyms, fellowships, and other titles that it is difficult for a member of the public to obtain complete information and accurately assess the importance or relevance of the designation." Postsecondary degrees may be listed when including the name of the granting institution, the date the degree was conferred, and the subject area in which the degree was obtained. All continuing education courses may be listed but must contain the name of the course or program, provider, location, date it was completed, and number of hours of instruction, and nothing else. The listing of awards, patient testimonials, and memberships or associations is also prohibited under the new bylaw. As specialists, we have excitedly accepted this new bylaw, as it will create greater clarity for patients in distinguishing between a general dentist and a specialist.
