I graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 2015 with a DDS, and from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2011 with a BS in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. Project Overview The goal of this project, Rapid Maxillary Expansion Alleviates Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Nonsyndromic Children with Cleft Palate, is to evaluate the presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in non-syndromic children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip and determine the efficacy of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in the treatment of OSA. We hypothesize that RME will improve pediatric sleep questionnaires and polysomnogram scores and increase CBCT volume after treatment. The study will provide clinicians with information regarding prevalence of OSA in this patient population, as well as help establish RME as a viable treatment option for OSA patients with nonsyndromic cleft palate. Educational Benefit The etiology of OSA and the effect we can have on airway has recently been a hot topic for the dental profession, especially orthodontics. Orthodontists are able to manipulate development and growth, and through routine treatments for maxillary constriction like RME we may be able to alleviate OSA in certain cases. Orthodontists play a unique role on the craniofacial team when treating patients with cleft palate, and this patient population suffers from an increased incidence of OSA with a more complicated etiology of upper airway obstruction than the general population. There is little known about the effect of RME on cleft palate children with OSA; if it is shown to be a successful treatment option for cleft palate patients with OSA, it will allow clinicians a noninvasive, relatively inexpensive treatment option for this patient population. AAOF Importance The AAOF is very important to our project. Their support will allow us to strengthen the analysis of our data by hiring statisticians, as well as giving us the opportunity to present our findings and learn from others at professional meetings.
