Let's Talk About That
rently campaigning a 1960 Corvette and a 1969
FIA Camaro. It's great time of therapy, and I come
back from those racing days refreshed and ready
to jump back into creating great smiles.
KF: You believe all orthodontists should strive
to be certified by the American Board of Orthodontists. Explain why this achievement is so
important to you.
KF: Have you completely made a transition from
behind the wheel to behind the lens, so that you
now photograph these awesome cars instead of
racing them?
GJ: When I graduated from orthodontic residency, I had the intent to eventually become
board-certified. At that time board certification
was not a goal that was promoted by our profession, and the demands of developing an orthodontic practice and a young, growing family
completely filled up my dance card. I think I initially undertook the certification process 30 years
into my career as a way to remain competitive in
the patient marketplace under the lens of social
media and online presence. I quickly discovered
that reviewing my orthodontic treatment cases
was especially enlightening and educational. It is
the optimum way for each one of us to evaluate
how we are diagnosing, treating, and retaining
our orthodontic results. There is probably no
better exercise to improve the provision of
orthodontic care and the way we approach the
day-to-day application of our abilities than to
take a critical review of our past results. The ABO
process gives the practitioner a way of critically
evaluating his/her treatment progress with very
specific goals and objectives in achieving optimum results- the results every patient deserves.
GJ: Entering my orthodontic program required
that I purchase a Nikon SLR and become
acquainted with photography. That produced a
lifetime addiction to capturing images. Twentyfive years ago one of my patient's parents, an
executive for Toyota, gave me "hot pit" passes
for the Long Beach Grand Prix, and of course I
brought along my camera. I went back the next
year and asked drivers to autograph the photographs I had taken the year before. The drivers
and teams appreciated my pictures and started
ordering prints from me. That led to working
with magazines and race teams as a photographer, capturing the racing action for international publications and top-tier racing teams.
My 10 years as a photographer with the Corvette
Racing team was especially memorable; experiencing the Le Mans 24-hour race for 10 years
made a gigantic impression upon me and created
huge memories for a lifetime.
