Ray lectured and taught in the graduate orthodontic program at Loma Linda for 40 years. He
excelled in teaching clinical excellence and treating for long-term stability. He lectured all over
the world, showing his cases and teaching orthodontists how to achieve stability in the final
result. As recently as two years prior to his death,
Ray showed cases that were out of retention for
30 years. Ray was a master of studying faces, profiles, and inclination of anterior teeth in all races,
especially Asians. As a result, Ray developed a prescription for Asians, and named it SEBA, which
stands for Sugiyama Esthetic Braces for Asians.
Ray's last days were difficult, but he insisted that
Larry Bramble and I meet with him as part of our
orthodontic study group to the very end. We met
at least once a month for 44 years for lunch or
dinner, showing and discussing cases, and also
discussing politics, of course. Our final meeting
was at Ray's home with Sharon, and we shared
his favorite meal: sushi!
In closing, Ray had a passion to lead and serve
with dignity. Rest in peace, Ray. We will miss you,
but carry you in our hearts and minds.
Ray married his lovely wife, Sharon, in 1968 and
they had two boys, Darren and Brandon. The kids
were amazed that their dad, who had never
played soccer, was able to coach them as well
as the team and won many championships. The
kids learned many mnemonics that all stood for
hard and dedicated work, always striving for
excellence.
