The 117th Annual Meeting of the American
Association of Orthodontists is now history.
Over 17,000 individuals were able to attend this
event in San Diego. Nearly 5,000 doctors were
in attendance; office staff members were well
represented, with over 3,000 present.

The House of Delegates passed several resolutions
that will have consequences for our members.
You may be especially interested in the following:
1. 03-17 CSBMC - Bylaws Amendment - Article III
Membership, B Eligibility, 1. Active Members,
d. Type of Practice: This resolution basically
removed the membership requirement that
individuals must be in the "exclusive" practice
of orthodontics, and limited the active membership requirement to those who have
graduated from an accredited orthodontic
program. The submission of this resolution
was related to the ADA resolution in that
year's ADA House of Delegates (Resolution 65),
which I discussed in a previous issue of the
Bulletin.
2. 24-17 COMEJC - Principles of Ethics and Code
of Professional Conduct: This resolution
replaced the AAO document previously in
place. The passage of the new code was also
related to the passage of the ADA resolution
in 2016. These two resolutions help to
strengthen and clarify the reality of what is
taking place in various practice settings today,
especially in certain communities.
3. The definition of Interceptive Orthodontics
that appears in the CDT Code Manual will
change next year, as the HOD voted to change
the vocabulary based on a recommendation
from the Council on Orthodontic Health Care
(COHC).
4. Virtual meetings: The AAO HOD has held its
November meetings in a virtual setting for
the past few years. A committee met in 2016
to devise a protocol for conducting this meeting. The HOD stalled on this recommendation

and referred the mechanics and protocol back
to the committee for further study. There were
too many questions and no easy answers.
A Strategic Planning Session was approved for
the 2017-18 term. Thirty-seven participants
and consultants will meet in St. Louis to discuss the AAO under the leadership of McKinley Advisors, a firm that has conducted similar
sessions with the ADA, American Psychological Association, and American Institute of
Architects, among others. The cost of this project is estimated to be $165,000.
In an effort to make AAO HOD deliberations
more transparent, the Board of Trustees (with
substitutions by PCSO and NESO) introduced
a resolution to allow for live streaming of the
first and second sessions of the HOD. This
would provide an opportunity for individuals
who are unable to attend to view the proceedings on social media (e.g., Facebook). The AAO
has live-streamed several Town Hall events on
Facebook (at the Annual Session or mid-winter meeting) with great success. However, for
now this resolution was referred to a special
committee for further study.
Financial literacy: This program, spearheaded
by PCSO, is based upon the successful program launched and presented to the residents
this past year in the various PCSO universities.
It has met with great success and was used as
a pilot project for the AAO. The resolution to
make this program available throughout the
AAO Constituents passed with overwhelming
support.
CAP assessment reduction to $600: After
much discussion and a presentation by our
new Director of Marketing and Communications, Ms. Katie Maassen, the CAP assessment
was reduced from $800 to $600 this year. The
new emphasis will be on social media and the
variety of ways we can reach the public and
optimize our footprint using this form of communication.
