New AAOF Mission and Strategic Plan
The mission of the AAOF was amended recently,
and now reads as follows:
The Mission of the AAOF is to advance the
orthodontic specialty by supporting quality
education and research that leads to excellence in patient care.
As previously announced, the AAO Foundation
has been involved in a major strategic planning
effort to effectively re-work the organization in
its four key areas, i.e., Awards, Board, Fundraising
and Staffing. These elements are expected to
come together at the July meeting of the AAOF
Board of Directors, after which there will be a
more formal and complete announcement about
our new direction.
In the interim, we would like to make you aware
of some changes in the Awards Program, beginning this next funding round:

 Funding for Senior Faculty: The Biomedical
Research Award, which currently offers a maximum of $30,000 per project, was heretofore
only available to junior to mid-career full-time
faculty. Beginning with the next funding
round, this category will be expanded to
include senior full-time faculty as well.
 Call for Proposals (CFP):In addition to a CFP for
Access/Barriers to Care (first announced last
year), there will be a second CFP for the Business/Practice of Orthodontics in all funding
categories.
The awards materials, which will explain these
new offerings in more detail, are expected to
be posted on the AAOF website by or before the
first of July. The proposal deadline remains
December 15.
2017 Awards Program
The proposal deadline for the 2017 Awards Program was December 15, 2016; by that date we had
received 45 submissions (eight of which were
from PCSO members), requesting $1.3 million.
About two-thirds of that amount was awarded.
Each proposal was reviewed by the Planning and
Awards Review Committee (PARC), and the Board
of Directors approved the following projects
within the PCSO:

Biomedical Research Award
 Giseon Heo, University of Alberta: Robert L.
Boyd Biomedical Research Award
 Min Kyeong Lee, Children's Hospital Los Angeles
 Benjamin Pliska, University of British Columbia
Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship
Award
 Jin Hee Kwak, University of California at Los
Angeles: Willie and Earl Shepard Fellowship
Award
 Richard Christian Solem, University of California at San Francisco: James A. McNamara
Orthodontic Faculty Fellowship Award
Research Aid Award
 Sara Adabi, University of California at San
Francisco
 Maryam Elyasi, University of Alberta
 Robert J. Lee, University of California at San
Francisco
 Jennifer Yau, University of the Pacific
Additionally, the AAOF continues its support
of the Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collections
Project. The Mathews Growth Collection at the
University of the Pacific is one of the participating collections.
Continued Commitment to the Specialty®
If our specialty has been good to you, and if you
are interested in ensuring its future, please:

 Pledge $5,000, $25,000, or more over five
or ten years.
 Become a member of the Century Club by
making an ongoing commitment of $100 or
more each month.
 Remember the AAOF in your estate plans by
becoming a member of the Keystone Society.
