Impacted Maxillary Canines:
An Interview with Dr. Jae Hyun Park
At some point in their practice, every orthodontist
struggles with a unique set of challenges that
accompany an impacted permanent cuspid:

the first bicuspid aligned as the abandoned

Biography
Trying to edit Dr. Park's CE without severely
diminishing its significance is a considerable editorial challenge. Dr. Park, an experienced editor
himself, has executed this responsibility a number
of times for other authors, so let's ask him how
he would sum up his credentials.
Ken Fischer (KF): Dr. Park, before we discuss
impacted maxillary canines (IMC), please reach
into your large bag of credentials and pull out
the top three that you think best represent your
achievements and for which you would like to
be remembered.
Jae Hyun Park (JP): (1) During my orthodontic residency at New York University College of Dentistry
(NYUCD), I received the Dean's Award, first place
Postgraduate Resident Research Award, and first
place Master of Science Research Award. In addition, I received the Charley Schultz Award (First
Place Winner in the Scientific Category at the
Orthodontic Resident Scholars Program) during
the AAO Annual Session while representing
NYUCD. NYUCD submitted my research, "Zn-CaP
Material as Potential Anti-bacterial Coating for

Summer 2017  PCSO Bulletin

Orthodontic Brackets and Implants" for a U.S.
patent. After graduation, I also received the
Joseph E. Johnson Award (First Place Winner at
the AAO Table Clinic Competition) from the AAO
for my cone-beam computed tomography study.
(2) Since 2008, I have worked as the Orthodontic
Program Director at A.T. Still University. Currently,
I am Professor, Chair and Program Director of the
Orthodontic Department. Recently, the University
appointed me as Chair of the Faculty Promotion
Committee. Since 2008, I have published more
than 150 scientific and clinical articles in peerreviewed orthodontic and dental journals as well
as two cover pages in the American Journal of
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO), two books, and 13 book chapters. Recently, I
started working with Elsevier on my third book,
entitled TADs in Contemporary Orthodontics.
More than 50 well-known authors from around
the world have committed to contributing chapters for this book.
(3) Every year since 2013, I have been invited to
be an ABO Examiner for the ABO Clinical Examination. Recently, I was selected as an ABO Director
representing the PCSO. As an ABO Director, I will
be working as a member of the Written Examination and Policy committees. I will become the
ABO President in May of 2024.
KF: Dr. Park, please indulge me with this first
question: If you were being interviewed for the
most important position you could ever expect
to attain, what would you want the interviewer
to know about you?
JP: I am currently Editor-in-Chief of the PCSO Bulletin. I also serve as a Section Editor of Dentofacial Orthopedics and Orthodontics for the Journal
of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, and as an Associate
Editor of the Journal of the World Federation of
Orthodontists. I also serve as an Editorial Board
member of several orthodontic journals including The Angle Orthodontist and Seminars in
Orthodontics. In addition, I serve as a referee for
