BS: Nearly all of the orthodontic patients treated
at SCH have congenital or acquired craniofacial
conditions that require an integrated team
approach. In 2016, the SCH Craniofacial Center
saw 3,579 patients, ranging from newborns to
young adults up to age 21. The most common
conditions were orofacial clefts, plagiocephaly,
craniosynostosis, and branchial arch anomalies.
Dr. Kapadia has a particular interest in conditions
affecting the craniofacial complex that can benefit from advanced reconstructive surgical techniques such as distraction osteogenesis. 90% of
my orthodontic patients have craniofacial conditions; others have a serious medical condition,
such as hemophilia, which is outside of the scope
of practice for many community orthodontists.
Two examples are included with this article, and
a more complete patient story is available online.
Case 1 shows a boy with severe unilateral cleft lip
and palate treated with orthodontics and asymmetric distraction osteogenesis.
BH: What is the relationship between your
department and the UW School of Dentistry?
BS: There is a strong, longstanding relationship
between SCH orthodontics and the UW School of
Dentistry. Since the 1990s, UW orthodontic residents have benefitted from receiving part of
their craniofacial education at the hospital. Seattle Children's faculty has mentored and continues
to participate in UW orthodontic master's thesis
research projects. The hospital serves as a key
training site for UW oral and maxillofacial surgery residents and pediatric dentistry residents.
