New and Younger Members Dr. Skyler Liatti Orthodontic Resident Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Dr. Mina Katchooi PCSO Bulletin Contributing Editor Dr. Skyler Liatti Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Why did you apply to the orthodontic program? My first exposure to orthodontics was when I had braces and orthognathic surgery as a young adult. This started me on the path that led to dental school. I knew I wanted to continue my education beyond general dental training, but I was not clear on which specialty to pursue. It was not until I was exposed to wire bending in an Introduction to Orthodontics class that my interest was truly piqued. The exercise was complex, precise, and fun; I was hooked. My curiosity and aspirations compelled me to participate in an orthodontic-related research project during dental school, which began my journey toward specializing in orthodontics. Tell me about your orthodontic residency program. Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Advanced Specialty Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is a 27month Master's degree and certificate program. It has a strong emphasis on didactics and provides a foundation upon which robust clinical and research experience is built. The strength of the program stems from our eight full-time faculty and 15 part-time faculty and the staff's dedication to the students' acquisition of knowledge Dr. Michael Gunson with Loma Linda University orthodontic residents Summer 2017 PCSO Bulletin and skills. We receive extensive training in multiple treatment philosophies, which value critical thinking and sound biological and biomechanical principles. Our daily clinic sessions follow a small practice setting where second-year residents mentor first-year residents. In addition to taking part in leadership, teaching, and volunteer opportunities, we rotate through a craniofacial clinic and observational surgery rotation. The program incorporates interdisciplinary classes and encourages regular interaction and treatment planning with other specialty departments. What are some highlights of your residency? In our second year of the program, we travel to Santa Barbara for an observational surgical rotation with Dr. William Arnett and Dr. Michael Gunson in their oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. Being exposed to their unique philosophy of diagnosis and treatment planning and observing their surgical techniques changed the way I thought about surgical orthodontics. Another great attribute of our residency is the six weeks of vacation time we enjoy each year. Many residents take this time to travel and visit family. This vacation time contributes to overall life balance in the program. Loma Linda University orthodontic residents 51
