New and Younger Members

We are very involved in our local church. One of
my favorite volunteer activities is Young Life, an
outreach ministry focused on teenagers. I have
been on the Northern Arizona Young Life Committee for over three years. I am currently one of
their financial advisors. My husband and I also
serve our community as foster parents for highneeds infants, which we love!
Do you believe the curriculum within your postgraduate orthodontic program provided sufficient
depth and breadth to prepare you for the clinical
practice of orthodontic care?
Absolutely. I could not be happier with my residency experience at Loma Linda University!
Looking back, what has been the most positive
aspect of your residency?
We received excellent training at Loma Linda University in all areas of orthodontics. I am forever
grateful for the education I received, and I'm
proud to be member of the university's alumni
association. In addition to the clinical and didactic training, I enjoyed the focus on research. A
Master's research project is required for the LLU
orthodontic specialty program. I was honored to
receive an award from the school for my research
project and to have my work published by the
prestigious journal, The Angle Orthodontist.
1. If you decide to enter into a partnership or
employment agreement, get everything in
detailed writing in a contract. I mean everything,
from the hours and days you are going to work to
how income is split. Think about these scenarios:
What happens if you or your partner are injured
or killed? What happens if/when it is time to buy
in, and what will the price be? What happens
when one of you wants out of the deal? It is a
huge pain up front, but worth it in the end. If
someone wants to employ you or have you be an
associate and maybe buy in someday, but will not
go over these details with you, walk away. My
partners are my dad and a guy I have known
since high school; I would trust them with my
life, but we have a legally binding business contract that is over 60 pages long.
What advice do you have for graduating residents?
I have two pieces of advice:
2. Live like a student for a couple years while making a doctor's income, and destroy your student
debt completely. I am talking about five years or
less, not the 30-year repayment plans. Find every
book, blog, and podcast you can about debt
reduction and money management and learn it
all for yourself. You are smart, and you have an
incredibly high earning potential. You have a
responsibility to manage those resources well.
