It is hard to believe that it is summer already.
Time certainly does not stand still. As a kid, I
remember being conflicted about wanting time
to race by so that school would be out sooner or
I'd be another year older and closer to the next
big milestone, like learning to drive. But come
summertime, boy did I want the days and weeks
to be as long as possible, so that I could enjoy the
outdoors, playing at the pool, barbecues, and lack
of routine. These days, I find myself only wanting
time to slow down, seeking more time to relax
and enjoy the people, places, and things that surround me, more time to just watch my children
play and figure out this crazy thing called life, and
more time to accomplish the many tasks at hand.
Your PCSO has been working steadfastly over the
past several months on many tasks that you will
likely find of interest. Of particular note is our
commitment to including new and younger
members on a variety of PCSO committees and
workgroups.

 The current PCSO representative to the AAO
Council on Scientific Affairs, Dr. David Covell,
made us aware that he will be resigning his
position, effective October 2017. The search for
candidates is underway, and phone interviews
will take place over the summer. Face-to-face
candidate interviews with the PCSO Board of
Directors will take place at the PCSO fall board
meeting at the Annual Session.
 In April, your PCSO delegation spent several
days with AAO members from across the
country, discussing and debating policy that
will move the orthodontic specialty forward.

 Planning continues for the 2018 PCSO Annual
Session to be held in Monterey, CA. The team
consists of Drs. Bryan Hicks (General Chair),
Tom Merrill (Doctor Program Chair), Mary
Cooke (Staff Program Co-Chair), Paul Kasrovi
(Local Arrangements Chair), Payam Owtad
(New & Younger Member), and Ms. LeeAnn
Peniche (Staff Program Co-Chair). Select members of the planning committee will visit
Monterey in June to select venues for various
member events.

 Work has begun on two new critical issues:
leadership development resources and a
review of the PCSO face-to-face continuing
education opportunities. Drs. John Trotter and
Tom Merrill, respectively, chair these two
groups; each includes a new and younger
member. In addition, Dr. Mary Cooke is leading
the Critical Issues Task Force focused on promotion of the benefits of an orthodontic staff
career. Look for many exciting outcomes from
these groups in the months to come.
 Two other groups working behind the scenes
include the Communications Committee,
under the leadership of Dr. Todd Walkow, and
the Member Needs Assessment Committee,
led by Dr. Marie Lathrop. These groups are looking at enhancements to the PCSO website and
mobile app, as well as conducting further
research and online focus groups with PCSO
members in order to ensure that your needs
are being met. We hope you will be willing to
provide feedback if you are called upon for
participation.
 The 2017 PCSO Annual Session will be held
October 12-15 in Reno, NV. You won't want
to miss our Casino Royale Welcome Party on
Friday night; it will feature casino games, a
photo booth, and a DJ showcasing top 40 hits
plus 50 years of James Bond singles. As
always, PCSO is proud to offer quality lectures
with superior faculty for both doctors and
staff. Elevate yourself to new heights; join your
PCSO colleagues for networking and interaction with thought leaders, and enjoy all the
adventures that the Reno area has to offer.

Have a great summer, and make sure you take
time to enjoy the little things: smell the roses,
run through the sprinklers, do a cannonball into
the pool, take a nighttime walk with the kids and
catch fireflies. Once fall comes beckoning again,
I hope to see many of you in Reno in October. 
