I am humbled and yet honored to report that
I was chosen as the ABO Director representing
the PCSO after Dr. Steven A. Dugoni finishes his
8-year term. I have some pretty big shoes to fill,
but I will do my best to assist in the evolution of
the certification process as it continues to be a
guiding light for orthodontists.
Clinical Exam Update
The ABO certified or recertified 25 examinees
from PCSO who participated in the Clinical Examination from February 21-25 in St. Louis, MO.
Congratulations to the following PCSO members
who were certified or recertified: Tarek
Abousheta, Tanya Z. Al-Talib, Sona Bekmezian,
Ralph A. Callender III, HyeRan Choo, Choon
Chung, Matthew J. Cozin, Amir Dadgar-Yeganeh,
Brittany H. Fischer, Ninette Hacopian, Santhosh
Jayachandran, Matthew W. Joosse, Elysa R. Kahan,
David B. Kennedy, Brandon R. Lloyd, Todd R. Moore,
Christopher R. Myers, Jesus I. Patino, Jr., Brian W.
Payne, Armin Vahidnia, Sireesha Veeranki, Peter
M. Vrontikis, Katherine Wong, Junyi Xie, and
Stephan S. Yoon.
The ABO recently announced changes to the Certification Renewal requirements. Individuals may
now select from two different options in order to
complete the certification renewal examination.
These include: (1) a Case Report Examination
(CRE) for one case, by mail, along with continuing
education credits from online AJO-DO exams; or
(2) preparation of treatment plans for two online
Board Case Exams (BCE) and continuing educations credits from online AJO-DO exams. Complete information on Certification Renewal may
be found on the ABO website.
New additions to the clinical exam include the
following:
 Development of a Craniofacial Certification
Examination (September 2016).
 Final digital models accepted (September
2016).
 Banking rules have been extended to apply to
all orthodontic practitioners.
 There are now two teams for each examinee
during the Clinical Exam: one team to score

the Board Case Oral Exam (BCOE) and the
second team to score the examinee's cases
and Case Review Oral Exam (CROE).

Written Examination Update
The ABO Written Examination was administered
April 4-7 at Pearson-Vue Testing Centers
throughout the United States and Canada.
ABO at the 2017 AAO Annual Session
Dr. Steven A. Dugoni will serve as past president
of the ABO after the AAO Annual Session. The
AAO House of Delegates confirmed me as the
new ABO director representing the PCSO region.
The ABO is pleased to announce the following
award recipients, who will be recognized during
the 2017 Annual Session:
 Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award:

 Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics: Dr. Andrew J. Haas
 Earl E. and Wilma S. Shepard Distinguished
Service Award: Dr. Michael L. Riolo
 O.B. Vaughan Special Recognition Award:
Dr. Deborah E. Priestap
During the San Diego meeting, the ABO showcased several successful cases from this year's
Clinical Exam at the ABO Case Display room.
Directors and staff were available to answer
questions regarding board certification. In addition, an informational booth was located outside
the Exhibit Hall to display ABO educational materials available to board certified orthodontists.
The ABO offered a workshop for ABO-appointed
Advocates during the AAO Annual Session. The
meeting allowed an opportunity to review the
Advocacy program and the available materials,
and to answer Advocates' questions.
