Portrait of a Professional

do? I was already experimenting with the Herbst,
but the rigid steel rods transmitted all the bite
force, up to 50 pounds, to the attachment points.
Heavy intermittent forces are the exact opposite
of what our research calls for. Why not have a
light continuous force, flexible Herbst that curves
out of the way of the food bolus? I started making them in my lab, and grew my practice with
non-headgear Class II treatments. Parents and
patients loved it, and word spread that I could
correct overjet without the parent's or patient's
input. I eventually had the appliances commercially manufactured, but they could not control
the breakages and the idea of a flexible low-force
Herbst faded away. I was still inspired to create
a gentle, fixed, non-linear appliance that did not
rotate the maxilla. Between 2002 and 2006, I
practiced in Santa Cruz, and in 2006 I moved to
Portland, OR, and began to practice in Fairview.
In 2010, I removed the ball hinge from the upper
molar, and intermaxillary edgewise was created.
Now, the curved vectors from Dr. Angle go right
through the center of rotation of the maxilla.
I dropped the force to only 3.5 oz., to avoid stressing the lower anchorage, and the last Class II
appliance was born.

Kite surfing on Bodega Bay

Fall 2017  PCSO Bulletin

CS: How did you meet your spouse?
JJ: My office was in Santa Rosa, so it was an easy
commute from the coast at Bodega Bay. Windsurfing had just been invented, and Bodega had
solid 20-knot winds every day all summer. Except
for the great whites, Bodega was an ideal spot to
learn this sport. I became addicted to the speed
and simplicity of this water sport machine and
sailed over 150 days per year.
In the winter though, the wind died, so I found
a spot south of La Paz in Baja and bought a little
palapa house on the beach. Huge waves would
blow down the Sea of Cortez; the invention
of kiteboarding kept me exercising daily. One
morning, I went to a windsurfing lecture down
the beach at a hotel where 30 windsurfers from
Marin County were living. Klaus, my German
friend and doubles partner, walked in with a
woman that had the most beautiful face I had
ever seen. I was stunned. As the song says, "I saw
her face and that's the last I've seen of my heart."
Nina had met Klaus in Hood River, and he invited
her to Baja for the winter. I had to be very gentle-
