Located in Southern California, UCLA Orthodontics is a clinically intense and didactically driven
three-year orthodontic program with a concomitant research component, whereby all residents
are encouraged to complete research projects
and obtain a Master of Science in oral biology.
Research performed in the UCLA Section of
Orthodontics spans basic and translational science and clinical research. Current projects
involve subjects at the benchtop and chairside
levels, and now, even outer space!
The chairman of UCLA Orthodontics, Dr. Kang
Ting, conducts tissue engineering research, predominantly on bone regeneration, by means of
investigating growth factors and mesenchymal
stem cells. Since discovering and successfully isolating the novel protein NELL-1 from prematurely
fusing cranial sutures in craniosynostosis
patients,1 Dr. Ting has spent a majority of his
research career elucidating the mechanism of

Recently, Dr. Ting's group (Figure 2), including
Co-PIs Dr. Chia Soo (plastic surgery), Dr. Benjamin
Wu (advanced prosthodontics), and project manager Dr. Jin-Hee Kwak (orthodontics) was funded
by NASA and CASIS to send mice into space in
order to study the potential of systemic NELL-1
administration to prevent microgravity-induced

action and translational applications of this
robust small molecule. NELL-1 has been found to
be a potent osteoinductive molecule in several
small2-10 and large animal models3,11 via both
local2-8,10,11 and systemic3,9 routes of administration; the molecule holds great promise for the
prevention and reversal of osteoporotic bone loss,
which affects an estimated 10 million Americans,
resulting in 2 million pathological fractures per
year.12 NELL-1 has been shown not only to inhibit
bone resorption, but also to promote bone formation, resulting in improved bone quality and
increased fracture resistance (Figure 1).
