Healing
Teamwork is very important. We all have to stick
together and help each other out as much as we
can, especially in the dental field. If we lift each
other up, nothing is impossible. There is no team
without support: it keeps a team together.
Monthly Meetings
Now that you have addressed interview skills,
training, and teambuilding, you have built the
team you wanted. How will you keep your staff?
I strongly believe in scheduling monthly meetings
of at least one hour. This is a great way to make
sure everyone has enough time to contribute. It
is also a chance to let your staff know how well
they are doing. Take this opportunity to give
kudos to each person and to show how much
each team member is appreciated. Team meetings help everyone stay informed and take ownership. I always go around the room and ask each
assistant how they are doing; is there anything
they would like to talk about, any area where
help is needed? Take a genuine interest and get
involved in your team members' lives; ask how
the kids and spouses are. It opens dialogue and
gets people to talk and laugh. By facilitating communication, these meetings reduce tension in
the back office.
If there are no monthly meetings, assistants shut
down. This brings down morale and makes team
members feel that they cannot talk about things
that may be bothering them - or that their opinions are not valued.

Fill the Gas Tank
I know it sounds like a silly motto, but out of all
the pointers that I have listed, I feel this is the
most important thing we can do to maintain
morale in the back office. Have monthly potlucks
on special occasions like birthdays, holidays, or
engagements. It brings everyone together to try
different foods; it brings so much laughter, and
the staff gets to talk to each other in a relaxed
atmosphere. I also like the idea of having an
Employee of the Month (or Quarter). This helps
employees to feel appreciated and valued in the
practice. It is always a treat to go to lunch; it gets
everyone out of the office and relieves some of
the stress of day-to-day life. It provides a chance
for staff to get to know each other a little better
in a group, or on a one-on-one basis.
Bonuses are always appreciated, whether via
a check or a gift card. It is always nice to show
appreciation for all the hours and hard work
assistants put in.
If we do all or a few of the items listed, we cannot
help but have the best assistants, and the best
morale in the back office.
Tressa Reeder is the lead orthodontic assistant for
the orthodontic program at the Arizona School of
Dentistry & Oral Health. She has been in the dental
field for seven years as an assistant and teacher.
She resides in Gilbert, AZ, with her husband and
enjoys spending time with her two daughters and
five grandkids.
