ABO Mission
The mission of The American Board of Orthodontics is to elevate the quality of orthodontic
care for the public by promoting excellence
through certification, education and professional
collaboration.
ABO Vision
The American Board of Orthodontics is the global
leader in orthodontic board certification and sets
the standards of care for excellence in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
Change to the Board Certification Process
The ABO announced a change to the design of
the Clinical Examination that will become effective in February 2019. The new design uses a scenario-based oral examination format and no
longer requires orthodontists to submit patient
cases. The tools previously created by the ABO to
assess case outcomes will continue to be thoroughly tested within the scenario-based examination process.
The decision to change the examination format
was the result of extensive research and collaboration with leaders in the industry, reviews of
other specialty board examinations, and input
from educators. This process identified the need
to improve the testing methodology in order to
assess clinical proficiency and critical thinking
skills. The intention of the new examination is to
ensure each orthodontist has developed exceptional expertise and is capable of providing the
highest level of patient care. It offers an improved
testing method that complements what residents are learning in their programs.
There will be a one-year transition period before
the new examination is implemented. The traditional patient case submission examination format will be offered by petition only for September
2018 and February 2019.
The ABO stands confidently behind the rationale
for this change and believes creating an improved
examination that is fair, valid, and reliable is in
the best interest for the future of our specialty.

ABO Yearly Update
Clinical Exam Update
The ABO conducted Clinical Examinations in
February and September 2017. A total of 222
examinees were certified or recertified during
these examinations. A complete listing of newly
certified or recertified orthodontists by constituency can be found on the ABO website. Registration information for the examination is posted
on the ABO website.
ABO Clinical Examination Examiners
The ABO is interested in adding new individuals
to our pool of Clinical Examination examiners. To
be considered, each candidate must:

 Be a board-certified orthodontist in good
standing with the ABO.
 Have received initial ABO certification at least
five years ago.
 Be involved in direct patient care and/or serve
as clinical faculty in an accredited orthodontic
program at least one day per week.
 Demonstrate contemporary knowledge of
orthodontics.
 Be comfortable with the use of technology.
 Be familiar with the Clinical Examination
criteria.
 Have no conflicts of interest or self-promoting
motives.
 Be able to respect and maintain confidentiality.
 Commit to the following:
▪ Participation as Examiner for Clinical
Examinations.
▪ Be willing to accept examination preparation projects, assigned as needed.
 Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills,
professionalism, and flexible approach.
 Be impartial, objective, and consistent in
approach.
 Be able to work as part of a team.
 Have experience with tutoring or examining
(preferred).
 Submit three references and a current CV.
