Oregon
The Oregon State Society of
Orthodontists (OSSO) held its general meeting on December 1, 2017.
Dr. Karla Kent spoke on infection
control, which fulfilled the requirement for state
license renewal. We also heard excellent research
presentations from graduating OHSU residents
on a variety of topics. Congratulations to the
class of 2017!
Our next general meeting will be on November
30 and will cover medical emergencies in the
dental office. More information will be available
at our website. The Oregon Orthodontic Alumni
Association will be hosting its annual Hixon Lecture on Friday, April 13, featuring Dr. John Kanyusik.
Details can be found online.
I am excited to share that, based on input from
membership and the OSSO board, the Licensing,
Standards and Competency Committee has
recommended to the state board revisions to
current rules regarding EFODA certification for
dental assistants. There were concerns about
assistants' ability to meet current requirements
for tasks such as fitting bands and headgear, as
these procedures are now performed less commonly in many offices. Dr. Dharmini Pathmanathan submitted a letter on behalf of the OSSO
recommending EFODA certification focus on
more prevalent procedures, such as arch wire
changes and removal of brackets and adhesive.
The Rules Oversight Committee of the Oregon
board will take up the issue and hopefully vote to
amend the rules at their next meeting this spring.
We will keep our members posted on the outcome.
I am also happy to welcome Dr. Craig Elgin to our
board as secretary-treasurer. We are still looking
to add an additional board member. The time
commitment is very manageable and you would
be doing a huge service to organized orthodontics
in our state. If you are interested, please contact
any current OSSO officer through our website.

Saskatchewan
Our new president, Dr. Brian Phee
of Regina, was elected at the
annual meeting. Our next annual
meeting is scheduled for June 1 in
Regina. Invisalign is sponsoring the event, and
lectures for doctors and team members are
planned. We are looking forward to another great
event!
We are also thrilled to have the first PCSO President hailing from the Saskatchewan component
this year with Dr. Kam Olfert beginning his term
at the PCSO Annual Session. We are excited and
look forward to working with him during his term.

Washington
The Washington State Society of
Orthodontists (WSSO) currently
has 234 active members, 120 retired
members, and 22 lifetime members.
The 2018 WSSO Annual Meeting was held at the
Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue on February 2.
The leadership team would like to thank the doctors and team members who attended, as well as
the sponsoring companies whose support helps
to make our annual meeting possible.
Highlights of the meeting:
 Dr. Mike Gunson shared his ideas and experience regarding functional facial esthetics,
illustrating his points with detailed analysis of
his treated patients.
 Mr. Steve McEvoy presented useful and eyeopening information on digital security -
valuable not only to protect our practices, but
also for personal digital security.
 Dr. Sid Vora shared valuable information on
what the future holds for treatment of patients
with Class III malocclusion, emphasizing ideas
that are well-supported by the literature.
