teaching has been one of the most rewarding
aspects of my career.

JN: You have been a volunteer in the CAO, PCSO,
UC Orthodontic Alumni Association, and SF Dental Society, serving on boards and in officer positions. How did you get started with association
volunteerism?
SW: Phil Rollins was the executive director of
PCSO for about 20 years. He called me one day
and asked me to chair the CAO Legislative Committee. That got me started. I loved working with
other orthodontists from all over California. Chuck
Wear, Bob French,Tommy Thompson, Norm Nagel,
Greg Johnson, Norm Jacobson, and Richard Savage
were a few of my co-volunteers from that time.
JN: Please tell us about your immediate family.

SW: I met my wife, Rosie, in my sophomore year of
high school - we were high school sweethearts.

When I went to UCSB, we kept our romance
going. She worked in the business services
department at Bank of America for 18 years.
When our son, Chris, was diagnosed with juvenile
diabetes, she worked at home and then became
a teacher's aide at our kids' school. Rosie and I
have three sons. Chris, 37, is a nurse practitioner
trained at Yale. He started out as a computer
scientist and received a PhD from UCSF in medical informatics before moving into clinical work.
He is a primary educator in Northwest California
for diabetic therapy. Because Chris experienced
diabetes as a child, he brings a personal aspect to
this work. He and his wife, Emily, have two children, Sam and Cara. Our son Scott, 35, is a financial consultant. He is married to Lindsey and they
live in Roseville, CA, with their son, Jack. Pat, 31, is a
vice president of innovation for a financial services company that facilitates company acquisitions. He and his wife, Tori, live in Boise, ID. All the
boys have been very involved with volunteerism,
donating many hours to the American Red Cross
and Diabetic Youth Foundation.
