Obstructive Sleep Apnea
UBC's involvement with obstructive sleep apnea
(OSA) research was initiated by the pioneering
work of Dr. Alan Lowe, who retired from the faculty in 2016. Early studies first validated the use
of mandibular advancing oral appliances (OAm)
as a treatment option for adults with OSA, and
more recent efforts have focused on developing a
better understanding of the side effects of this
form of therapy. Continuing in Dr. Lowe's footsteps, Associate Professor in the Division of
Orthodontics, Dr. Fernanda Almeida, was among
the first to characterize the changes to the dental occlusion commonly observed over time in
such patients including reductions in overjet and
overbite, posterior open bite, and severe protrusion of the mandibular incisors.
Due to the indefinite nature of OSA treatment,
however, a clear understanding of the magnitude
and progression of long-term occlusal changes
was needed. To this end, Dr. Ben Pliska reported
on a cohort of 77 adults treated with OAm for
mild to severe OSA for an average of 11 years.3 The
results from this study confirmed that long-term
treatment leads to significant changes in occlusion for the majority of patients, and that these
dental changes were found to be progressive in
nature, continuing with ongoing OAm use.
Additional projects include a review of methods
of predicting OAm treatment, with a particular
focus on nasoendoscopy of the upper airway.4
