rest to protruded positions, and that the expansion ratio of the velopharynx was an independent predictor of oral appliance treatment

Ongoing research in adult OSA patients includes
randomized controlled trials funded by the
Canadian Institute of Health Research and the
American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) continues to be the first line of treatment suggested
by most sleep physicians for OSA; however, CPAP
typically has very low rates of patient adherence.
Dr. Almeida leads a multi-center trial with the
aim of directly comparing the efficacy of CPAP
and oral appliances in a group of patients who
are free to choose the treatment modality they
prefer. Additionally, this study will examine the
effect of a decision aiding tool and patient preference for either CPAP or oral appliances on
adherence rates, with the long-term goal of
improving how OSA patients are managed. Continuing with the theme of developing a better
understanding of the side effects of treatment,
Dr. Pliska leads a second clinical trial that examines the use of a morning repositioning splint as
a means of limiting or preventing the occlusal
changes associated with OAm treatment.
As a followup to Dr. Pliska's long-term study on
occlusal changes caused by oral appliances, doctoral candidate Dr. Mona Hamoda focused on
determining the nature of the changes associated with long-term oral appliance treatment
while evaluating the magnitude and progression
of these changes. Her study represents the
longest observational period to date of examining oral appliance side effects -up to 21 years of
follow-up with some patients. Employing
cephalometric analysis, Dr. Hamoda was able to
characterize the nature, magnitude, and progression of the oral appliance side effects, which is an
important step toward mitigation. As a result of
this research, Dr. Hamoda was selected for the
Graduate Student Research Excellence Award for
most outstanding research project and placed
first for a Graduate Student Research Award by
the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine
(AADSM) at their annual meeting in 2017.
