Why did you apply to the orthodontic program?
After attending dental school and working as a
professional for five years, I decided that I wanted
to become an orthodontist due to the art and science involved in the specialty. I thoroughly enjoy
the hands-on aspect of the profession and was
motivated and intrigued by the diversity of treatments ranging from those carried out for purely
esthetic reasons to those that control and modify
facial growth. Although it is a demanding field,
I have always found it rewarding and inspiring.
These considerations motivated me to complete
a postgraduate program in orthodontics in Peru,
which expanded my knowledge and improved
my endurance and productivity. My appreciation
for the specialty deepened as I learned to treat
more complex cases. Although I enjoyed the
dynamics between private practice and teaching
activities in Lima, I still had greater ambitions. I
wanted to move to Canada and graduate from a
CODA-accredited program. I decided to apply to
the University of Alberta and was fortunate to
be accepted.

Tell me about your orthodontic residency
program.
Being a graduate student at the University of
Alberta has been an amazing experience so far.
The program offers a strong curriculum and the
latest in clinical care with great professors who
delight in teaching. Most importantly, the residency is committed to serving patients in an
efficient setting that includes state-of-the-art
clinical and educational facilities which include a
CBCT machine, 3dMD® system, and a 3-D scanner
and printer.
What are some highlights of your residency?
The cutting-edge research and the wide variety
of instructors' philosophies and orthodontic
techniques, including lingual orthodontics and
clear aligners, make the program the ideal place
for enriching residents' skills so that they can
become successful clinicians.
