Pearls of the Pacific Flash Removal Using Black Light Removing adhesive and flash around composite attachments can be frustrating, and knowing precisely how far the flash extends can be challenging. Shining an over-the-counter black light over certain adhesives and composites, however, ➙ 58 ➙ Dr. Tarek Abousheta Irvine, CA can simplify flash identification and aid in its removal. This technique can be used to help clean up flash that may not be visible under natural light. Upper right canine is highlighted after attachments have been placed. Upper right canine shown after flash has been adequately removed The black light can also be used after a debond procedure in order to verify that all residual adhesive and composite has been removed. It is also more efficient to remove adhesive under a black light because you know precisely when to stop. Note that not all adhesives and composites will light up when illuminated with a black light.
