RETENTION
Treatment Results
At the end of Phase I, the patient's overbite, overjet, and molar relationship are Improved. His facial
balance is still hyperdivergent, but there is less
oral strain and protrusion. There is adequate
room for his permanent teeth to erupt, and the
correction is being maintained with a nighttime
retainer that has an anterior bite ramp. His maxilla
is held in place sagittally, and vertical development is minimized; mandibular development is
primarily downward, but parallel to maxillary
growth. Maxillary superimposition shows that
the maxillary dentition has retracted bodily, and
molar extrusion is minimized. Mandibular superimposition shows little dental change, and his
mandible has grown vertically.
Editor's Notes
In most cases with two-phase treatment, significant growth occurs during the Phase 1 retention
phase. Therefore, it is very important to carefully
plan the Phase 1 treatment according to the
patient's growth and development potential; it is
also essential to properly plan and select a Phase 1
to Phase 2 retention protocol. This is very important not only for maintaining the results achieved
in Phase 1, but also for managing the patient's
dental and skeletal growth and development
during this time.

faculty Dr. Jerry Nelson (UCSF 1965) treated this
case at the UCSF Orthodontic Clinic. Dr. Ikeda is the
daughter of Dr. Kazumi Ikeda (U of Pennsylvania
1981), who has lectured many times at the AAO
Annual Session and at Roth-Williams meetings.
