The orthodontics program at the University of
the Pacific began in 1971 and has been recognized
as a blend of didactic courses, clinical experiences, and research opportunities held together
by renowned specialists in the field. Our program
has created an environment of mutual respect
facilitated by a resident cohort of a variety of
backgrounds and experiences. This energetic
environment has given rise to diverse research
opportunities spearheaded by readily accessible
mentors. The institution where Invisalign began,
our program has been at the head of technological advances including 3-D imaging, anatomical
analysis, and longitudinal growth studies.
CRIL's AAOF Legacy Collection Project
and Mixed Dentition Study
Dr. Heesoo Oh is currently a professor in the
Department of Orthodontics and the director of
the Craniofacial Research Instrumentation Laboratory (CRIL). Her research focuses primarily on
measuring effectiveness of various treatment
approaches and the long-term stability of those
treatment outcomes. Specifically, the effectiveness of Class II early treatment has been a controversial topic in orthodontics for over 100 years.
Dr. Oh conducted a large retrospective study of
patients who received early treatment, comparing them with untreated control subjects; she
evaluated the treatment effect apart from the
normal growth, and followed up on long-term
stability.1,2

Recently, U.S. National Institutes of HealthNational Institute of Dental and Craniofacial
Research (NIH-NIDCR) funded for five years Dr.
Oh's craniofacial growth predictions study of various facial types in relation to skeletal maturation
indices (R01DE024732).
Growth information gained from untreated subjects plays an invaluable role in clinical orthodontic research. CRIL spearheads the AAOF Legacy
Collection project, which has been supported by
the AAOF since 2008 (Figure 1). Dr. Oh manages
the development of the AAOF longitudinal craniofacial growth collection, which incorporates
records and data from untreated human subjects
during childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. This rich and irreplaceable collection of the
growth records of 752 children who did not have
orthodontic treatment has been digitized and is
available to researchers, clinicians, craniofacial
investigators, students, physical anthropologists,
and other interested persons at no charge. (See
