Great News! Plastics Can Be Sterilized
Unfortunately, most offices are still using that
offensive-smelling liquid known as cold sterile.
Yuck! According to the CDC, cold sterile is no
longer the method of choice when sterilizing
plastic instruments. If an item is heat-sensitive, it
is preferable to use a heat-stable alternative or
utilize a disposable item. That's right, you read it
correctly. Get rid of that smelly cold sterile and
start heat sterilizing your plastics.
All orthodontic practices should designate a staff
member as an OSHA coordinator. That person
should be responsible for staying on top of new
CDC and OSHA standards and regulations. He or
she should keep the team updated about any
changes to sterilization protocols and policies.
Don't forget to document these updates and policy changes and incorporate them into new hire
training materials.
Creating a list of changes to the sterilization
process in your practice is the first step in creating a safe environment for your patients and
team. On the following page, you will find a sterilization checklist. You can mark whether each task
is needed on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or
annual basis based on your state's regulations. It
is important that all team members are fully
trained on your practice's sterilization polices
and protocols.
Tip: Most plastics can be sterilized at 250 degrees
Fahrenheit.

Cross-Contamination: "The Pinky Grab"
My all-time favorite taboo practice is "the pinky
grab." I am referring to the moment you realize
you need an extra cotton roll or you forgot to
grab your color modules. Instead of taking off
your glove, you open your chairside drawer with
your pinky. For some reason, most clinicians think
that the pinky is magically clean of any saliva or
bacteria when they are working in the mouth.
I am here to tell you, that notion is false. The following tip may help your clinical team eliminate
the pinky grab: place two cotton pliers in your
cassettes or tray set-ups. Be sure they are clearly
marked. One should be strictly for working in the
mouth, and the other should be placed on the
side in a clean area. That extra cotton plier can be
used to open drawers and grab something that
you may have forgotten.
