PCSO 2022 AAO Honorees
confidence in me that I could make a difference; Dr.
Richard Marcus, for always being in the hallways as
the voice of a friend during my many years of our
service together; Ms. Jill Nowak, former AAO chief
financial officer and PCSO executive director, who
guided me through an uncharted journey personally
and professionally. I feel so fortunate to have been
able to stand on the shoulders of such orthodontic
colleagues such as Dr. Lili Horton, who always told
me " Yes, you can! " ; and Dr. Howard Hunt, Dr. Lesley
Williams, Dr. Steve Dugoni, Dr. Paul Kasrovi, and Dr.
Bryan Hicks, who have always been supportive of my
involvement for so many years. My deepest appreciation
to all of you.
I am so grateful to the CAO, PCSO, and the many
friends nationwide in the AAO for trusting me with
the multiple leadership positions I have held. I
acknowledge as well the dedicated delegates and
the AAO trustees who have truly blessed me with
friendships I'll cherish for a lifetime.
Behind the scenes of all my dedication and efforts
stood many other people who provided unwavering
support. I'm grateful for my professional " brother " and
partner, Dr. Barry Hoffman, for being there when I
wasn't. My loving family of children Jared, a financial
portfolio manager; daughter-in-law Rachelle, a senior
resident in oral medicine; Carly, a professional makeup
artist; son-in-law Brandon, an electrical engineer; two
wonderful grandsons, Asher and Dax; and Michael, a
journeyman plumber, all of whom give me the drive
to be who I am. And to my loving wife, Maureen who
has been my wing-woman and the wind beneath my
wings, thank you for giving me all the support and
encouragement to participate in my passions. Also,
to Dr. Adele Wolk who grew and evolved with me
through my early years.And, finally, I offer my thanks to
the AAO and the committee of past presidents: I will
always be grateful to have such a wonderful honor
bestowed upon me-thank you.

I have a passion for orthodontics and the specialty. My
message for any young person would be to enjoy the
specialty. The membership organizations are here to
help support you in your chosen career. The services
offered and the interconnections with others in your
specialty create a home base from which you can
offer the best that orthodontics has to deliver for the
care of your patients. To keep current in your specialty,
it's important for you to share in the organization's
vision by being an active member. I would like you to
know, " it's a wonderful life. "
AAO Humanitarian Award
The AAO Humanitarian Award recognizes individuals
who have made significant contributions to improve
the quality of human life that extends beyond the
usual scope of private orthodontic practice, academic
functions, or organized dentistry.
Dr. Angie Loo
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Spring 2022 PCSO Bulletin
Dr. Loo was born and raised in Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada. After graduating from the UBC
Faculty of Dentistry in 1985, she completed her general
practice residency at the Hospital for Sick Children,
in Toronto, Ontario. At the University of Manitoba,
Dr. Loo graduated with a combined certification in
the specialty of orthodontics and master's in science
in craniofacial biology in 1989. Her clinical research
interest is in the effect of presurgical nasoalveolar
moulding (PNAM) therapies on facial asymmetry in
newborns with facial clefting.
Dr. Loo is an associate clinical professor at UBC and
the course coordinator for the graduate orthodontic
and pediatric dentistry programs in cleft and craniofacial
care. She has been an active orthodontist team
member on the British Columbia Children's Hospital
Cleft and Craniofacial Team since 1991, where she
