instruments for pitch. But the value of that "nonessential" AOA remains as an instrument that
considers speed, loading and attitude for a morereliable indication of an approaching stall.
Back in that February, the FAA said it believed this
"streamlined policy" might serve as a "prototype" for
production approval and installation of other add-on
aircraft systems in the future.
It wasn't long before that prototype process went
to work. Along the way, the FAA found other avenues
through which non-TSO equipment could find its
way into the panels of both type-approved and EAB
aircraft.
The next dominoes were quick to tumble
The floodgates didn't open wide immediately after
the FAA unveiled its new attitude and processes, but
open it eventually did.
At the 2016 Sun 'n Fun Fly-in, the Experimental
Aircraft Association made the jump-in point for EAB
avionics entry into "approved" avionics for generalaviation aircraft. Working with experimental avionics
maker Dynon, the EAA won supplemental type
certificate approval for the installation of the Dynon
model EFIS-D10A (later expanded to include the
EFIS-D100) as a direct replacement for vacuumdriven primary attitude indicators.
While the Dynon equipment does not have a
TSO or a PMA, the EAA was able to have the
Dynon EFIS-D10A and EFIS-D100 approved under
a provision of the regulations for non-aviation
"commercial parts" (14 CFR ยง 21.9(a)(4)). The
certification of the EFIS-D10A and EFIS-D100
included a product verification against the recently
developed ASTM 3153-15, Standard Specification
for Verification of Avionics Systems, and qualifies
to serve as a stand-alone instrument. And finally,
although Dynon sells the D10A and the D100 as
electronic flight information systems in the EAB and
LSA markets, the STC approves these instruments
as primary attitude indicators, all the other
information is supplemental.
Garmin soon introduced its self-contained
G5 primary flight display for the EAB market. At

AirVenture Oshkosh in July 2016, Garmin announced
an STC allowing the installation of the G5 in
certificated aircraft as an approved replacement for
vacuum-driven attitude indicators; a second STC
approval allowed the installation of a second G5 for
use as a replacement for a vacuum-driven directional
gyro or horizontal situation indicator when paired with
a G5 installed as an AI.
Since then, Garmin expanded the STCs multiple
times to cover nearly 700 airframes, while adding
autopilot interfaces to the mix.
The PMA-approval approach:
lower costs, increasing options
The most-recent venture into certificated aircraft
with EAB avionics circles us back to Dynon, arguably
a pioneer in this practice thanks to its work to help
the EAA win multiple STCs for installing the Dynon
EFIS-D10A and EFIS-D100 in a broad range of
aircraft covered under the approved model list STC.
Dynon Certified is the brand name carried by the
company's new Dynon Touch HDX hardware when
sold - with an STC - for certificated aircraft.
According to Dynon executives at AirVenture 2017,
PMA approvals for the various systems would be the
approach to qualifying the systems for use in typeapproved aircraft. But don't go looking for visible,
physical differences between the HDX systems in
EAB aircraft and certificated aircraft; there won't be
any.
The STC paperwork will cover the models; parts
manufacturing approvals for the various component
systems in an HDX will serve as the basis for the
hardware approval.
Now we've already seen examples of the same
hardware available for both EAB and type-approved
aircraft being priced approximately double for the
latter - partly because of the inclusion of the STC
needed. Not with Dynon Certified.
The price for a Dynon Certified and a Dynon
HDX system for an experimental aircraft will be the
same, according to the company. That was the word
last summer at Oshkosh; that was still the word in
November 2017 during a check with the company.
The large-screen HDX system, fully equipped,
runs at about $16,000, less for the smaller display
model. The STC Dynon will offer will run about
