flow of data and information within the connected aviation
ecosystem is coming sooner than we think.
Stone: I wish I had 10 years of foresight to share, but you
can't underestimate the impact adjacent technologies like
consumer electronics and the automotive industry will have on
aviation and avionics. It's impacted a lot of what we've seen
over the past 10 to 20 years, and I think it's going to continue.
Whatever it is, it will help us collect and provide more
information to pilots. With more access to information, pilots can
fly more safely - but it's not just raw information, it needs to be
useful information.
Improving the man/machine interface, reducing pilot
workload and helping to keep the pilot's attention where it
needs to be are all ongoing goals for any future technologies.
Luster: I think we're going to see ways to introduce
automation to reduce pilot workload and enhance safety. I see
it paralleling along the path of what we see in cars today - more
automation, voice recognition, self-driving capabilities and less
hands-on interaction by the driver.
My concern is, will it be too much of a good thing? At
what stage does automation and technologically enhanced
capabilities surpass pilots so they don't even really know how to
fly an airplane anymore?
Stewart: The next 10 years look to be quite an exciting
time as technology continues to drive innovation into
aircraft. Whether it is in terms of additional connectivity to the
certified avionics and passengers or in the advancement of
autonomy, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, these
technologies are enablers to changing all market segments,
from fully autonomous air taxis and cargo vehicles to single-pilot
operated air transport aircraft.
We also expect to see additional safety features being
added to offerings to reduce the number of runway incursions/
excursions and on-ground incidents. There will also be
technology advancements to react to the potential pilot
shortages, items like simplified pilot operations and more
efficient air space management. 
Yahav: Cockpit avionics will need to adapt to the biggest
challenge in the industry today - the lack of pilots. Therefore,
avionics have to be simple, intuitive and easy to be trained on.
They will also have to support one of the major pain points for
pilots - operation at night and during low-visibility conditions. 

Avionics News: What do you see as the driving factor
moving forward: technological advancements or regulatory
mandates?
Schwinn: I'm firmly in the technological advancements
camp on this one. Where I hope that the technological
advancements are the most interesting are regarding retrofits
for control system type technologies such as our Envelope

Protection autopilot. That scratches the surface of what's
possible if we can figure out how to make it economically
sensible to modify an aircraft's control system - things like
auto flight or stability systems and these kinds of things for
light airplanes.
Carrico: It's a mixture of both. Today's technologies
are advancing at an incredible pace, and these are driving
innovation into the aerospace sector. Safety remains
paramount, and so industry and regulators work together to
make sure new technology meets the demanding performance
and safety requirements for commercial transportation. Take
enhanced vision systems for instance, originally introduced
nearly two decades ago, but which continue to improve in
performance.
Those performance improvements pushed the regulators
to grant increased operational credit for enhanced flight
visibility systems. Conversely, regulatory mandates such as
ADS-B Out and emerging ICAO recommendations for global
aeronautical distress and safety systems push the industry to
develop innovative solutions for these systems.
Stone: I don't see any major mandates on the horizon
right now. So I think the driving factors will largely be
technological coupled with an aging fleet of aircraft - the
technology in much of that fleet need updating to stay current
- that's a lot of what is feeding our business now and will
continue to do so for at least the next decade.
There could be a lot of interesting stuff coming along in the
near future to address some of those needs.
Luster: It will absolutely be technology.
As a mandate, ADS-B was a big one because it is
completely changing how ATC is used. I don't see anything
else like that, except maybe on the helicopter side, but nothing
for GA that I can foresee within the next 10 years.
On the technology side, I think a lot of what will be
introduced will be based on the FAA's ability to create
guidelines. There will be restrictions on what avionics
manufacturers can do because of regulations. There always
have been and always will be.
Stewart: Both will drive major changes. Technology
advancements in the areas of increasing processing
power, larger memory storage and faster connectivity will
improve the way we deal with the data that's available to the
pilot. Improved usage of big data by data scientists via data
analytics should improve many of the current operational
issues like predicting failures to reduce the number of
unscheduled maintenance events. Regulatory mandates
should drive increased air management efficiency and safety.
