" The interest charges could turn out to be less than the
additional cost you might incur in a second or third visit over the
years, as there is usually some cost involved in removing and
reinstalling interior items, " he said. " Plus, equipment costs tend
to increase over time, and so does the hourly labor cost. Given
these factors, an aircraft owner may want to proceed sooner,
and in one step with the avionics upgrade they have in mind,
enjoy the flying benefits of that more-complete vision, and use
financing if that helps make it happen. "
Also, as of this writing, interest rates are reasonable but
rising, and many lenders support avionics financing. If your
bank isn't one of them, ask your avionics shop who it normally
uses. Like any other financing, ask your bank if said avionics
upgrade loan can be paid off early to save on interest charges.
Your avionics shop is a value-adding partner
I apologize if I sound like an infomercial for your local
licensed avionics shop, but I truly can't overstate the important
and, yes, money-saving role the shop can play in your panel
upgrade.
You may indeed " know a guy " who says he can do your
installation. And yes, he'll do it a lot cheaper than a licensed
shop. But cheaper is not better when it comes to all things
aviation. Heck, it's rarely ever smart.
Every time you strap yourself, your family, and your friends
into your airplane, you are totally responsible for the safe
outcome of that flight. So, you need - no, make that should
demand - the total assurance that anyone who touches your
airplane is the best at what they do.
Of course, to get the full benefit of said relationship, you
need to be totally transparent to the installers about any issues
you have with the avionics or instruments you currently have in
the airplane. Why?
Well, simply, if something else in the panel isn't working
correctly, then when they install your new whatever and on the
test flight and it doesn't perform correctly, they'll spend untold
hours troubleshooting your new radio. And all of it may well be
wasted time.
Don't try to save money by not fixing problems you know
you have. That's just wrong for a lot of reasons, but the bottom
line is that it won't save you any money in the long run.
" Pick an avionics shop you can trust and work with them, "
Gallagher said. " There are several ways to accomplish what
you want to do at lower costs than you are thinking. An
experienced shop knows more ways to get you to your dream
panel than you do. " q
