internal faults that can't be duplicated during pre-installation

Most Part 145 avionics shops require a pre-test of any
pre-owned box you want to install. In many cases, they will
do it even if the unit has a valid 8130 tag. It's an added bit of
insurance, but it does come with a bench-test fee.

'Serviced. No-Fault Found.' But, when we install it, the piece
doesn't work in the panel, " Eddy continued. " It's frustrating for
the aircraft's owner and us. It adds to the time and cost of the
project. "
If you think pre-owned is a good option for your situation, he
stressed the need to ask the seller about their policy regarding
replacements or warranties on the unit. You don't want to get
stuck paying for the unit and then paying again to repair or
replace it.
" The buyer needs to do their homework to know what the
flat-rate repair costs are for today's avionics and instruments, "
cautioned Chuck Gallagher of Cincinnati Avionics. " If it's a
Garmin radio, it can only be repaired at the factory. Right now,
they have a flat-rate fee no matter if they're replacing a knob or
a circuit board.
" If you're buying a 430W, for example, by the time you pay
for the unit and the repair fee, you're not too far off buying a
brand-new radio that's going to have a two-year warranty. And
when it comes to many King or other brand radios; you can't
even get them fixed any longer. There aren't any parts. "
Pay me now, or pay me later
So, is buying pre-owned avionics online a good deal? Well,
if you've read this far, you know the answer is an unequivocal
" maybe. "
If you are willing to invest the time and effort to search
for the right equipment that meets the compatibility and
airworthiness requirements of what you currently have in your
panel, then have at it.
If not, save yourself a lot of added trouble, stress, and
possibly money by working with and buying from a reputable
avionics shop. They know a lot more about any of this than you
do or will. In the end, isn't your peace of mind worth a few extra
dollars? q
