On the Cover: Find the Mathematics... in Musical Instruments!
Dusty Jones
Pre-K to 2nd Grade
Introduce students to different musical instruments. You
may want to bring instruments into the classroom, or have
students watch a video like this one from Happy Sunshine

Musical instruments make sounds in different ways.
String instruments make sounds when strings are plucked
or pulled with a bow. Wind instruments make sounds
when air is blown over them or through them. Percussion
instruments make sounds when they are tapped or hit.
This video by Smile and Learn - English shows pictures
and sounds of several different instruments:

D, E, F, and G. The note names follow a repeating pattern:
ABCDEFG, and A follows after G.
Jennifer's electric piano keyboard has 45 white keys, and
the first one on the left is an E.
What is the note name for the sixth key?
What is the note name for the 45th key?
How many of the keys play a C? How many will

Here is a image of two octaves, consisting of 24 keys. In
the image, the note on the far left end is C.
How many full octaves are in a standard piano?
If the lowest note on a standard piano is an A
(a white key) what is the highest note?
6th to 8th Grade
