On the Cover: Find the Mathematics... in Musical Instruments!
Here is the scatterplot for the guitar data.
The correlation is negative, as decreasing the length of the
string increases the pitch. From the graph, it appears that
the correlation is strong. However, these data may have a
curvilinear relationship rather than a linear relationship.
From the graph of the line of best fit, a length of 35 cm
would give a frequency of 150 Hertz. However, the data
in the table suggest that a length of 35 cm would give a
higher frequency than 150 Hertz.
While you could continue to decrease the length of the
guitar string, the apparent curve in the data would make
extrapolations unreliable.
