a glass panel upgrade is more than just installing a couple of new components – it’s a fundamental redesign of the flight deck avionics suite, and it needs to be treated as such. “Once you scope out the install and get the regulatory stuff out of the way, it’s time for design – and this is really different from just installing a radio,” Harrah said. “You need to sit down and map out what interfaces will be used and how to use each interface to the best advantage. Some vendors are going to proprietary high-speed data busses that let you carry more signals over fewer wires. If you understand how that works, you can maximize performance and get full benefit, as opposed to using old RS232 and ARINC-429 ports. Use all the resources available. Manufacturers have a lot of documentation that may not give you direct regulatory credit but save you time, like best location for magnetometers, which varies between different airplanes.
