IT

wasn't	that	long	ago that	business	flights	were	
viewed	by	many	as	an	opportunity	to	get	off	
the	phone,	unplug	for	a	while	and	get	away	
from	the	complications	of	modern	life.	Yes,	the	en	route	
time	was	spent	productively,	but	connectivity	wasn't	
important.	Perhaps	you	would	use	the	cabin	telephone	
or	break	out	a	laptop	and	polish	the	presentation	being	
given	at	the	destination,	but	that	was	about	it.	Being	cut	
off	from	the	rest	of	the	world	was	a	feature,	not	a	bug.	
Then	came	the	Internet,	and	with	it	instant	gratification	
of	text	and	video	communication.
What	followed	-	the	legitimate	need	to	remain	connected	with	colleagues	
and	customers	no	matter	the	location	or	activity	-	didn't	take	off	immediately,	but	it's	arrived.	Ironically,	it's	basically	the	same	dynamic	driving	
business	aviation	in	the	first	place	-	on-demand	presence	and	communication,	but	with	modern	digital	connections	replacing	something	that	runs	on	
Jet	A.	Now	there's	an	expectation	of	even	greater	responsiveness.	Being	connected	with	
the	rest	of	the	world	hasn't	
diminished	the	need	for	business	transportation,	but	it	has	
created	demand	for	airborne	
connectivity	where	it	didn't	
exist	-	and	perhaps	wasn't	
wanted	-	before.
Of	course,	there's	connectivity	and	then	there's	connectivity.	The	need	
to	exchange	megabytes	of	data	between	a	corporate	office	and	an	airborne	
laptop	is	rare.	This	is	a	good	thing	because	the	service	needed	to	get	large	
files	to	the	business	aircraft's	cabin	can	be	expensive,	both	for	the	hardware	and	the	bandwidth.	It	makes	that	kind	of	bandwidth	the	province	
of	large-cabin	business	jets	or	airliner-size	transports,	with	the	budget	
and	real	estate	required	to	mount	the	appropriate	antennas.	Few	in-flight	
Internet	services	can	stream	HD	video	economically,	but	that's	usually	not	
what	passengers	want.
