Role with it

Model high-performance behavior to get the most from your employees

W

henever	employees	are	on	the	clock,	they're	
also	on	the	watch.
They	are,	of	course,	looking	at	you,	the	boss.	
Worst	case,	they're	waiting	to	see	what	you	do	next.	Better	
case,	they're	making	notes	about	what	you	do	right.	Best	case,	
they	see	something	that	makes	them	want	to	follow	in	your	
footsteps.
"Your	staff	really	wants	leadership	-	your	staff	really	
wants	a	pack	leader,"	said	Jerry	Osteryoung,	professor	
emeritus	of	finance	and	entrepreneurship	at	Florida	State	
University	and	co-author	of	If You Have Employees, You
Really Need This Book.	"Staff	is	relying	on	you	to	provide	
leadership,	and	this	leadership	comes	from	being	a	role	
model	they	can	emulate."
This	role-model	creature,	of	course,	is	the	individual	who	
consistently	demonstrates	the	behaviors	that	are	most	valuable	
to	an	organization	so	others	can	learn	and	prosper.	This	makes	
the	technique	a	remarkably	effective,	affordable	management	
tool,	and	it's	simple:	The	example	you	set	is	the	product	you	
get.	Surprisingly,	though,	only	one-third	of	all	employees	say	
their	managers	live	up	to	that	responsibility,	according	to	a	
survey	by	human	resources	firm	Investing	in	People.
Obviously,	there's	room	in	many	managers'	skill	sets	
for	improvement,	and	if	you're	always	under	the	magnifying	glass,	you	might	as	well	use	it	to	your	advantage	-	
by	understanding	the	job	of	a	leader,	acting	out	your	ideal	
of	a	"model"	employee	and	making	it	an	everyday	part	of	
your	presence	so	these	changes	become	an	integral	part	
of	your	avionics	repair	shop's	culture.	After	all,	you	can't	
expect	them	to	"do	as	I	say,	not	as	I	do"	-	at	least	not	if	
you	want	to	succeed.

ROLE OF A LEADER
Like	it	or	not,	your	avionics	repair	shop	is	a	reflection	of	
you.	As	the	shop's	owner	or	manager,	if	you're	disorganized,	so	
is	the	shop.	If	you're	cranky,	so	are	your	employees.	If	you	cut	
corners,	staff	starts	looking	for	scissors.	But	if	you're	happy,	
honest,	friendly	and	fair,	they'll	follow	that	lead,	too.	In	every	
case,	staff	takes	its	cues	for	what	to	do	and	how	to	do	it	from	
the	person	at	the	top.	The	actions	you	model	have	greater	influence	than	any	orders,	directions	or	invectives	you	can	spout.
"You	must	emulate	behavior	so	your	staff	can	see	exactly	
what	you	expect	from	them,"	Osteryoung	said.	
Your	example	serves	three	functions	for	your	people.	They	
get	their	motivation	and	inspiration	from	your	leadership	
when	they	see	the	passion	and	dedication	you	infuse	into	your	
shop;	they	redefine	themselves	in	your	image	because	they	
see	what	behaviors	will	guide	their	success;	and	they	embrace	
the	positive	habits,	beliefs	and	values	of	your	organization	-	
from	service,	to	safety,	to	ethical	conduct.	On	the	other	hand,	
according	to	research	in	the	Harvard Business Review,	one	
in	four	managers	who	admit	to	behaving	badly	say	they	are	
uncivil	because	their	leaders	-	their	role	models	-	are	rude;	
that's	what	they	were	"taught"	effective	managers	do.	This	
disruption	eventually	makes	its	way	to	your	customers.	
"The	minute	you	drop	a	stitch	between	the	manager	and	
the	employee,	that	stitch	is	going	to	be	dropped	10-fold	from	
the	employee	to	the	customer,"	said	Martha	Finney,	author	of	
The Truth about Getting the Best from People.	"The	basics	
of	courtesy,	patience,	information	sharing	and	a	level	of	personal	responsibility	around	the	customer's	safety	-	all	those	
things	have	to	be	modeled	from	above	to	the	customers	via	the	
employees."
