R

ecently, Avionics News visited with Pat Napolitano of Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics
to learn more about his experience as a pilot and
how it helps him as an industry professional.
How long have you been flying?

I have been flying for 29 years with more than 4,000
hours logged.
What is your favorite or most
memorable moment as a pilot?

I have been very fortunate to have many memorable
moments - from receiving my pilots certificate at the
age of 20, to taking my daughter for her first ride at the
age of 3, to getting checked out in the North American
AT-6. But I would definitely say the most memorable
moment was when I put my dad in the left seat of his
favorite aircraft, the North American Navion.
What aircraft do you fly?

My primary aircraft is Mid-Continent Instruments
and Avionics' Beechcraft D17S Staggerwing. On the
weekends, I fly a Starduster Too, Cessna 150, Cessna
182 and Beech Bonanza. I have also flown in various
types of tail wheel aircraft, such as North American
AT-6, Stinson 108-3, Vultee BT-13, Cessna 170B, Navy
N3N-3, PT-17 Stearman, P-51 Mustang, and numerous
tricycle Beechcraft, Cessna and Piper Aircraft.
What is your favorite aircraft to fly?

It depends on the mission. When I am visiting MidContinents' great customers, the Staggerwing gets the
call. When I feel like going upside down, it's the Starduster. When I want to take my girlfriend to breakfast, I
fly the Bonanza or Cessna 182. I like all airplanes, but my
true passion is for any aircraft with a tail wheel.

When did you know you wanted to become a pilot?

My dad purchased a house in 1977, one block south of Van
Nuys Airport. We were right over the flight path for runway
16R. My first airplane ride was in a Boeing Stearman when I
was 13 years old. After that ride, I knew I had to fly.
How does being a pilot impact your job?

Being a pilot is definitely beneficial for my job. However, it's
the combination of being a pilot and a certificated airframe
and powerplant technician with avionics experience that really interfaces well with my job. I can observe situations from
both sides of the fence. Having this combination, I can maximize the customer service that we provide. It is the best of
both worlds, and I truly enjoy every aspect.

What are your current ratings?

I hold a private pilots certificate and an airframe and
powerplant certificate with an inspection authorization
endorsement. (Actively Engage)

As a pilot, what are your thoughts on new technologies?

I think new technology is great when utilized properly. I'm
still an old-fashioned 'steam-gauge' pilot. I fly with my charts,
plotter and stopwatch - even though I fly with a Garmin
GTN 750. During my travels, I have had the opportunity to
learn from many pilots, ranging from those with the most
experience to those just starting. Some pilots are becoming so
comfortable with new technology that they are forgetting the
basics of flying. We all need to remember to 'fly the airplane'
and continue to check visual references. New technologies
can be invaluable when combined with basic flying skills. Together, they allow us to make the safest decisions. q
