They	advise	pilots	to	get	back	in	touch	with	their	latent,	
inner	rookie	pilot	and	train	on	their	new	systems	-	versus	the	
do-it-themselves-with-the-manual	approach.
Sitting	with	ground	power	or	running	on	the	battery	-	
engine	off	-	is	always	a	good	approach	to	getting	a	feel	for	
the	operating	systems,	layer	logic	and	menu	architecture	of	
any	computer.
Avionics	shops	should	encourage	aircraft	owners	and	
pilots	to	turn	to	the	avionics-maker's	training	offerings	
to	start	the	fundamentals	of	understanding	the	operating	
differences,	benefits,	logic	and	limitations	of	their	new	
touch-controlled	panel	equipment.
Then,	put	the	learning	to	use	with	the	benefit	of	an	
appropriately	rated	safety	pilot	or,	better,	a	safety	pilot	or	
instructor	versed	in	the	system	under	study.
While	some	feel	the	logic	and	simplicity	of	some	of	these	
new	systems	instills	user	confidence	fast	enough	to	train	
and	fly	several	hundred	miles	in	the	same	one-day	session,	
instructors,	safety	authorities,	avionics	makers,	plane	makers	
and	plain	old	pilots	advise	against	indulging	in	that	instinct.

Epic,	one	of	the	pioneers	of	cursor-control	devicedriven	integrated	avionics	to	today's	state-of-the-art	
sensitive-screen	input	devices,	the	art	and	science	of	
machine-human	interface	moved	ahead	significantly	in	
the	years	since	Primus	Epic	research	and	development.	
Honeywell	and	several	other	firms	are	pursuing	R&D	
work	on	using	voice	and	other	forms	of	input,	and	
so	is	every	other	company	competing	for	avionics	
business.
Eye-point	input	systems,	voice	control;	it's	a	little	
boggling	to	imagine	a	day	when	pilots	simply	talk	to	
their	aircraft	systems	-	like	Mr.	Spock	often	did	in	
episodes	of	the	original	"Star	Trek."
And	lest	anyone	chuckle	at	the	example	as	one	
far-fetched	and	too	futuristic,	consider	that	personal	
communications	devices	and	individual	computers	
similar	to	what	"Star	Trek"	foretold	are	probably	right	
next	to	you	right	now.
You	smartphone;	your	iPad	or	Kindle;	maybe	that	
wrist-camera	from	"Dick	Tracy."
It's	simply	a	matter	of	staying	in	touch.	q
