GARMIN made several announcements during the annual Sun 'n Fun
International Fly-in in Lakeland, Florida.
The Olathe, Kansas-based company announced the pending approval of
the G5 electronic flight instrument for installation as a replacement directional
gyro or horizontal situation indicator in type-certificated fixed-wing general aviation aircraft. When paired with select VHF NAV/COMMs or GPS navigators,
the G5 can be considered primary for displaying magnetic heading, VOR/LOC
guidance and/or GPS course guidance, as well as distance and groundspeed.
The installation of dual G5 electronic flight instruments also can eliminate
the dependency on a failure-prone vacuum system in aircraft for attitude
and heading information, according to Garmin. Installation approval is
accomplished via supplemental type certificate with a comprehensive
approved model list containing more than 600 individual aircraft models.
When paired with the GTN 650/750, GNS 430W/530W or non-WAAS GNS
430/530 navigators, the G5 is approved as a primary source to display vertical
and lateral GPS/VOR/LOC course deviation when available, as well as
groundspeed and distance to the next waypoint.
In addition, Garmin announced the addition of new capabilities and
enhancements for the GTN 650/750 touchscreen navigators. New GTN
features include visual approach guidance, control and display of the GTX
3000 transponder and GTS 8000 Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System/
Airborne Collision Avoidance System, as well as LNAV+V approaches without
Space-Based Augmentation System service. These new capabilities are
enabled by a free software update.
Garmin also unveiled the GMA 345 and GMA 342 all-digital audio panels
designed for fixed-wing aircraft. The GMA 345 features Bluetooth audio connectivity and a front-mounted USB charging port, while the GMA 342 contains
a dedicated 3.5 mm audio jack that allows pilots to connect a mobile device
directly to the audio panel. The GMA 345/342 also are pin-and-rack compatible
and slide-in replaceable with the GMA 340 and select third-party audio panels.
Garmin also introduced a new addition to the G3X Touch glass flight display
family, the 7-inch G3X Touch portrait display. For first-generation G3X customers,
the new 7-inch portrait display offers an upgrade path as the existing footprint is
adaptable to the new display and includes all of the same features as the G3X
Touch 10.6-inch and 7-inch landscape displays. Additionally, the new GMU 11
magnetometer allows for more installation options for experimental, amateur-built
and light sport aircraft.

PS ENGINEERING added another
dimension to cockpit audio with the
PAC45 Audio Controller with MultiTalker. Designed with a singular focus
on special mission audio requirements,
the PAC45 specifically addresses the
needs of airborne law enforcement,
medical transport, or fire suppression
with features for the demanding environment, according to PS Engineering. The
PAC45 incorporates PS Engineering's
licensed and patented digital audio
processing, Multi-talker, to locate up
to six communication radios spatially
in the crew's headset. This technology
aids the brain in comprehending the
conversations, instead of mixing the
audio together. The company made the
announcement March 13 during the
AEA Convention in New Orleans.
In addition, PS Engineering lowered
prices on its Plug and Play audio panels, while standardizing some options,
and is offering a free flight trial offer
and an incentive to avionics shops to
make the switch. The PMA450A Audio
Panel with OLED Display, dynamic
IntelliAudio and flexibility now includes
a PS Bluetooth streamer at no charge.
According to company founder,
MARK SCHEUER, "There are so many
benefits in controlling our own destiny.
Quality control, product availability, and
quick engineering turns are a few. The
