In memoriam
GREGORY G. DIMIJIAN, MD
Dr. Greg Dimijian, clinical associate professor of psychiatry
at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and
editorial board member of Baylor University Medical Center
Proceedings, died March 15, 2017, at the age of 85. He was born
on February 5, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama. As a youngster
he almost became a concert pianist. By age 8 he had a camera,
and over the course of his lifetime he took >100,000 photographs. Dr. Dimijian graduated from Davidson College in 1956
with a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry and from
Cornell University Medical College in 1961. He did a rotating
internship at the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle,
Washington, and then spent 2 years in the Epidemic Intelligence
Service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, being
stationed in Maryland. He then did a residency in psychiatry,
spending 2 years at the University of Washington in Seattle and
1 year at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School
at Dallas. He went into the private practice of psychiatry in
Dallas, Texas, retiring from that practice in 1993. During the
summer after his ﬁrst year in medical school, Greg Dimijian
became a national park ranger at Glacier National Park, and
that experience stimulated his interest in animal behavior, which
became a lifelong passion. In 1996, he and his wife, Mary Beth,
published Animal Watch: Behavior, Biology, and Beauty, a collec-

tion of some of his best photographs taken over numerous trips,
and in 2013, he published For the Love of Wild Places: Finding
Adventure and Beauty in Nature. Dr. Dimijian-scientist, doctor, naturalist, and world explorer-was a popular speaker at
Baylor University Medical Center and elsewhere, and Proceedings published several of his articles on biology and evolution
(1-7). A full interview with Dr. Dimijian conducted in 2000
is also available in this journal (8).
